You don't need one here in NY at 53yrs old but I took it anyways. :)

I passed with a 98% average & I didn't cheat at all on the test. :)

Now I can be a... Mr Know It All ....on the water this summer. :p . :D

Good job "Mr. know it all" :p... MAKES SENSE.
The Boating Safety Course is mandatory in my parts and I've had my certificate for years now, my first mate just got her certificate during this off season.

You want to think that more skippers take the course, not because it's mandatory, but because it may help them become a better boater.

Good job on passing the course. Are you ready for the reward?

Call your insurance man and tell him about it. Many companies will give you a 10% discount on your rate for taking that course.

Now you know it all and have a few spare bucks to buy some gas with.

Good work.

In NH it is required, I am very happy I took it because being a boating newb, I learned ALOT from it. Got a 97 on it, one question wrong, which i think was somewhat of a trick question.

If your boat capsizes you should:

A. swim to shore
B. tread water near the boat and wait for help
C. climb ontop of the capsized boat and wait for help.

Studying told me the real answer was to hang on to the boat and wait for help. I didnt like the idea of climbing on top of it because you could cause it to sink. so I said B. and of course they had the ansewr listed as C.

Re: Boating safety course.

I bought a jet ski a year or so ago and in my state my teenagers are old enough to drive it if they have competed the certificate. We get out on the lake and 16 y/o duaghter is cajoling me that she doesn't need to do the certificate (my mistake as I had let her drive it before checking the rules). I said no way. If you want to drive you need to have a copy of the cert on you. What a beautiful weekend I had drivng that ski with no competition.

Anyhow, two of them went home and completed the test (about two hours of online training) and got the certificate (my daughter needed another weekend of sitting idle to get the message).

I happy to say that these kids are now more knowledgable than most on the lake with them. My son is constantly telling me what I am doing wrong and pointing out others infractions.

And just from their comments, the portion on the jet ski safety was understood.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good idea to have a boater's certification program. But, in my opinion, passing an written exam does not make a good boater in itself. It just means one can pass the exam.

Re: Boating safety course.

Hey summer fun was that course put on by the local coast guard or power squadron? If it was then it was a legit thing, otherwise it isn't worth the paper it was writen on as I have found in the past
I recently ran accross a friend of mine who had taken a so called boating course that was NOT recognized and man he knew very little if anything about how to handle a boat let alone what to do in emergency situations . He could NOT answer properly a question on what to do if some was to fall over board and he was the only on left on board. I sure hope you had better training then he did.

I just passed my 13 week CPS boating course and man it was tough. The final exam was over seen by a coast guard instructor, I needed to have 80% to pass, there were 2 that didnt make it in my class of 5. I am sure of what I will be doing on and with my boat at all time because of it. :)
