Re: Boating hangun carry laws

My entire family is licensed with CCP's and we all know how to shoot very well. So we all carry most everywhere. That includes all vehicles and of course boats too. I don't see any problem with carrying on any boat. If fact I would like to get one of those small 45/410 single barrel fold up stainless steel shotguns to keep onboard. It takes up very little room and won't rust either... A hand-loaded 45 Long Colt round is equivalent to or even excess a 44mag round and most any dangerous animal would be dispatched with such a potent round fairly easy, at least where I live. Of course I have yet to come across such an encounter either, but the 410 shot gun round would take poisonous snake out very reliably.

I carry a old pawn shop bought Remington 870 with cutdown barrel and stock in rod locker, will deal with with the law after I pull the trigger....

investigate the consequences of possessing a sawed-off shotgun. It's not pretty. That's possessing, not using. And it's strict liability.

I know lots of people who used to carry them for snakes, not knowing the severe consequences.

As long at the barrel is 18" or longer it is fine. If it is shorter it is still legal with an NFA tax stamp but some states have specific laws that don't allow NFA items.

Home Cookin', you are absolutely correct about cutting down a regular shotgun barrel! However, IF that Remington 870 has a slug barrel (being rifled) then you can cut it to any length you like IF you also cut the rear stock section to become a pistol held gun and not a shoulder held gun then. And that IS 100% legal too... But it has to be a rifled barrel inside. They actually sell 10" 45LC/410 barrels for handguns. I have such and it is 100% legal! Gun laws are so screwed up with virtually no rhyme or reason for why one type gun is allowed while another is not but both shoot the exact same ammo... A standard pistol can have any length barrel you want, but add a wooden shoulder stock to it and then it is illegal. Nothing changes in the actual metal receiver section of the gun, but because of a piece of wood, one is legal while the other is not. Not that is totally screwed up and dumb too! :grumpy:

Wasn't there some guy in Northern Idaho who was rumoured to have one. Janet Reno sent the ATF in after him for it....

A pistol with a barrel longer than 16" is illegal. And 16 or less is only legal if where you live doesn't require a permit.

A long gun with a stock and a barrel less than 18" is illegal.

A long gun with a barrel longer than 18" and a cut off stock is neither a legal long gun nor a legal handgun.

I say all that with some reservation, of course, since if you live in the city of Podunk in the state of Denial you might be able to have anything.

Re: Boating hangun carry laws

I think that's where the major disconnect is on the question and advice instead of answers. If you prepare for every "possible" danger you can't leave the house. What do you do to protect your family from falling pieces of Skylab?

I've never had a flat tire, an intruder in my house, a person fall down on my front lawn nor any type of illness that put me in the hospital. Nevertheless, all are "possible". For that reason I carry a gun, have a spare tire and buy insurance.

Skylab is also possible, but not likely, so it is of no concern to me.

You might want to look up the laws. A rifle with a barrel less than 16" is considered and SBR (short barreled rifle). A shotgun with a barrel less than 18" and with a stock is considered an AOW (any other weapon). If you have an NFA stamp you can have both if the state allows it. A good friend of mine owns a shop and has his SOT manufacturer license. In this state full auto weapons are not allowed and by federal law in every state all full auto weapons are restricted to pre 1986 manufactured weapons. My friend has close to 30 full auto weapons because of his licensing (fun to play with ). I have talked with him a lot about the laws.

Re-read the caveat on my post. I have an FFL and I DO know the laws. My laws may not apply to you, of course. You probably live in EAST Podunk.....LOL.

That's why threads like this are of no value. First off, most DON'T know the laws, and even if they do they don't live where the poster does so they don't know the law there anyway.

Firearms are too important to rely on internet answers.

Spokane is the second largest city in Washington state behind Seattle. It is far from podunk. We are still not allowed to own SBRs or AOWs. We just got the right to own suppressors. My friend can own and manufacture or modify anything under his SOT even though they are not legal to own for anyone without an SOT. Just for fun these are a portion and are all full auto. It is not in the picture but the suppressed MP5 is my favorite.

Yeah that would be me from EAST Podunk. We draw all the super smart city folk that wreck their boats in our lakes, die and get attacked by our wild animals.

Re: Boating hangun carry laws

So, what did you get for an answer?

well the question, literally, is "does anybody know" so the answer from 3 pages of answers is "no."

If the implied question is "what are the regs...?" the question remains unanswered, but there is the legit follow-up question of "precisely where?" since the regs vary on different places (such as a National Park) within the states.

no, not only are they possible, they are probable. Then you weigh the odds of the probability against the cost/benefit ratio of the protection. That's why you carry a spare tire but not a spare transmission.
