boat will startup and then shut down

I have a 350 small block engine inboard, It will startup for about 2 sec. and then quit, I have checked the fuel pump (ok) checked the coil (ok) , if I pump the throttle it will try to start again and then quit, all my gauges work when I turn the key on, oh this is a mercruiser I think a 1996. Thank you for any help

How old is the motor? Does it have a ignition point type distributor with an ignition coil?

yes it does I think the motor is a 1996 Gm

Too new for me. I was thinking ballast resistor but they were long gone when that engine was made I think. If the problem is ignition related about all that is left is the key switch or shift interupt.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... Post the serial number of the motor, so we know which GM 350 Merc you've got,......

My 1st guess is, you've got an electric fuel pump, 'n the op switch is shot,....

being 1996, you have merc thunderbolt ignition. follow the troubleshooting tree posted in the stickies

should run for a bit longer than 2 seconds on the fuel in the bowl. however a good possibility

Any update?

Went through exactly this same thing last spring. 99.9% that is an oil pressure switch.
