Boat paint job gone wrong!!

Hey guys i just recently painted my 16 foot lowe aluminum boat, and apparently i didn't follow directions or did some thing wrong cause i can scratch the paint off with my nails, and the trailer tore it up pretty good too. I used rustoleum aluminum primer and rustoleum black enamel for the final coats. Now i did sand and clean the original paint before primer and i let primer dry for about 6 hours and then began painting and i let the final paint dry for about a day and a half, also the roller i used i think was crappie causes alot of the little fibers are in the paint now. Needless to say im am very displeased with the result, i dont think its the paint its the painter but i am by no meens a expert at painting and willing to admit it. So i would like to try and fix just dont know the right way of going about it. Can i sand lightly and put another coat on and just let it set and dry longer or use different paint? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no paint expert either, but I've found that rustoleum (and other oil based paints), absent a hardner, require a week or so to reach full hardness. After only a day I can usually scratch it off with a finger nail.

Ok so lets say i put another coat on and let it dry for a week would it be pretty tough?

Ayuh,... Let's say ya wait a week, or @, then sand it smooth, 'n try again...

Rustoleum is S l o w hardenin' without hardener....

Sand it now, 'n in 2 strokes yer paper will be full....

First off, If you are in, or were in the Marines...Thank you for the Service to OUR country. You have my Deepest Appreciation and Gratitude!!!!
The Paint YOur Boat link at the bottom of my signature has some good info on how to properly prep and paint your aluminum boat. Bond-o is correct in that you will need to wait a week to sand or you can buy some of the Citri Stip in the Orange can from Lowe's and it will strip it and some of the old paint right off. Follow the info in the link and PM me if you have any further questions. You can get great results if you follow the instructions. And the paint will last quite a while with minor touch ups. The Hardener makes all the difference in the world.

Did you by any chance use that weird Rustoleum primer that's actually latex?

I was going to ask the same question EZ...i was at lowes last night and they had a paint caled Latex aluminum primer...but the primer i want was the profession grade and in dark gray. I also bought a spray can of Aluminum primer that is white... i am pretty sure it is NOT latex. I wasnt about to buy latex primer or pain for my boat!!!! the big box stores around here carry only a token amount of the rustoleum paints.....none have the dark gray primer in the professional oil base line.

I have not used the white spray "aluminum primer" on my starcraft yet, but i did spray a little on the transom work i did on my old alumacraft...but its only been a few days so far.

there is so much more to a paint job than three simple steps!!

drying time...adheasion characteristics between the paints....sanding..not sanding....applying subsequent coast while still tacky...... if you wait too long, then you have to wait a LONG time to finnish drying and then sand!! before applying another coat.

yes i used the rustoleum aluminum latex primer thats what was referred to me, i think my big problem is that i jumped the gun and didnt let it fully cured, all though to my deffense the can only says a couple of days, but ill just wait a few more days and then sand a little bit and re coat it, and let it sit for a week, also would it be in my best intrest to put some sort of high grade clear coat on? i know its just a jon boat but i converted it to a nice bass boat and it meens alot cause it was passed down, thanks for the advice and tips you all.

i dont plan on completly clearing the paint off i just want to take some 220 to it just a bit to rough it up to give the second coat somthing to stick too.

if the problem is the latex primer wont let the top coat stick.... then no matter how long you wait, or how many coats you put on...it will peel...

thats akin to selling a product at a loss and hoping to make it up in volume!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:facepalm:

Ayuh,..... I'm thinkin' shootin' over the primer in 6 hours didn't help either....

Scuff it Smooth, like yer talkin', 'n find some of the Hardener that Woodonglass talks about, 'n add it to yer next top coat,...
let it set a week, or better,.... then no clearcoat needed, nor wanted...
