Boat dies in the water

I had this in the driveway on muffs, and it starts great after I had fixed the timing. I then get to the lake, put it in the water and it starts up fine. I back off the trailer and work my way to the dock. As I shift if shifts loud and hard. I dock at the pier, everyone gets in the boat, I back up, and when I put it in forward it dies. We float for about 45 mins while I keep trying to start. Finally I start it up and it won't go forward or backward. I have no idea what is wrong. I watched the throttle on top of the engine when my wife shifted and it moved back and forth. After I got home I noticed when I was putting the cover on that on top of the prop where the big nut is and on top of that bracket that sits in the grooves was bent up. So when I spun the prop it wasn't really connected. Hopefully someone can help me figure this out, because this has been a long process of issues while I have rebuilt this boat.

Sorry guys. This is a 1989 Charger 1850 that I completely rebuilt. The engine is a Mercruiser 4.3 L.
I attached the pictures for the prop I was talking about. The drive is an alpha one.

Something don't look right. The nut is too small for the locking ring. You may need to remove the prop and be sure all the parts for the hub are there..

Ok didn't remove the prop just yet, but I did notice putting it in forward or reverse the prop moves in either direction.

Ok finally got prop off and I think I found out the problem. With it not moving boat anyway. If you look at the pictures you can see where it looks like the splines on the lower grinded off the splines on the propeller. Also on thr picture of the lower. What is the the white tube that I pointed out? It looks like it is cracked down the middle or something.

Looks like you may have the wrong prop and certainly some mis-matched parts. I know only what mine looks like and that ain't it. The shaft is probably ok with a bit of work..

Believe your drive is a GENII version. It may make a difference when sorting out the prop, shaft & hardware issues.

Nope,..... The Gen.II came out in '91,.....

I'm guessin' that piece of tubin' is the alignment tube for the raw water pump,.....

Wait are you talking about for the water pump? Like if you separate the lower halves and you have the water pump that has the tube in it?

So if that is the case then it is possible that the engine would have trouble starting because of the tube not being on?

I think we're looking at two separate problems, the engine stalling, and the mismatched prop. Likely the cause of the engine stalling and not starting is not from that little tube, , unless the engine was severely overheated.
