hi there, we recently bought a beautiful 1987 19' sea ray seville cuddy with a 4.3liter vortech omc motor and cobra outdrive, come to find out the motor is knocking real bad and it has water in the oil. we really like the boat and want to fix it but we are wondering if we have to replace it with a marine motor, or can it be a normal 4.3 liter motor? and what years of motor are acceptable? can we use a mercruiser 4.3 or does it have to be omc? sorry for all the dumb questions, I have built a few chevy motors in cars and couple harley motors, but I am new to boats. any info would very appriciated. thanks :)

You sure can and people do it everyday.
Do it right though, you'll have to marinize the car 4.3
Your basically using the reciprocating assy and heads.
you'll have swap all the other components from the marine 4.3.
Intake&carb-starter&alternator-waterpump&pulleys-flywheel&coupler-distributor and probably some other stuff I can't think of too.
Why the engine has water in it is what you need to find out before swaping manifolds because they may be bad and you don't want to fill your new engine with water too.
Also the cam events are special to a marine engine to put the powerband down low in RPM range, so if you swap it too just make sure to keep the lifters in well you know I don't have to tell you anymore.
Oh WELCOME to I-Boats almost forgot!
There's probably about 20 guys here that have actually done the exact swap so you'll have plenty of input.

Welcome aboard !

May i ask did you not run this boat before you bought it ?

You do any research on the drive before you bought it ?

You sure you want to sink money into a boat with a drive that, has no support and the company that made it, is out of business for more then 10 years?

If the motor is bad how do you know the drive is any good ?

But to reply to your questions, because you didn't ask for advice on the drive is, yes you can put any 4.3 in it and make it work. Doesn't matter who made it.

Want the advice ? Ask for it and i will give it .

Re: blown 4.3 liter vortech omc motor/ drive question?

thanks for the welcome and the advice, it is very appriciated, that makes me happy to hear that i can do that. unfortunatly I did not run the boat, or research the drive before. It was one of those deals where I was owed money and would probly never see it, and he offered this. was still snow everywhere , so I hooked and booked with it. I planned on just selling it for what I could and eat the loss, but we really like the boat. it seems in great shape and everything seems to work. it fires up nice and idles great.(excluding the problems stated earlier), can I fire it up and and engage the drive to check it? is there any where I can look the motor numbers up to make sure of what's really in there?, I suspect the block has been changed before. what would be a good manual to pick up? sorry I have about a billion questions. heheh
thanks again for the welcome and the help guys :)

I have been offerd a real nice 4.3 motor and cobra outdrive package out of a 91 sea swirl, would that match up for a switch over ok? and what would be a good manual to pick up? sorry I have about a billion questions. heheh

Greener1, I put your reply on your original post. Best to just reply to a post and not start a new thread when answering a previous post.
