I have a 1968 Starcraft Holiday 18' - resto thread is elsewhere.

I am wondering about blasting the hull - aluminum. Does anyone have insight with Sand Blasting? Can I do the boat with a cheap suction style gun and a home size compressor?
Would it take forever?

Trying to get away from the burning dizzy goo stripper....

Thanks

Clark

Re: Blasting a Starcraft Question

It would take a long time....... look in the yellow pages and see if anyone does soda blasting in your area which will not hurt the aluminum. Sand blasting can be hard on it....... and with a small home set-up it would take serious time.... not too sure you would be happy with the results.

How bad is the paint? you can paint over old paint.... dewax, sand, scuff....paint.

If you blast you will need to re-treat the alluminum with a vinegar and water wash and then zinc chromate.

I was quoted $400-600 for Soda blasting a 21' Hull here in southern NH. And sand blasting will hurt the metal, and using walnut shells will take forever, Soda is the way to go but.. as Bob mentioned, you will have to prep then ZC it quickly to get it painted properly.
