bigger jets?

HI guys. i have a 97 e40reuc. I just recently installed a set of chris carson reeds, and rebuilt 50 hp carbs. the motor runs but after it's warm i'm getting a sneeze back through the intake at idle and it will only open up to full throttle if i press the primmer switch while at full throttle. also if you give it fuel too fast it stalls. The carbs are clean and i took my fuel pump apart and replaced some rotten orings and blew out my fuel lines. The carbs have the stock 50 hp jets but i can't help but wonder if i need bigger ones because it runs good if you press the primer. and runs fine at half throttle. could bad fuel cause this? i would think bad fuel would be more issues. if i do need bigger jets how much bigger should i start at? just one size at a time? both high speed and the intermediate or just high speed? thanks for any help.

Re: bigger jets?

Speaking generically it's highly unlikely you need a jet change unless someone changed the jets for a high elevation.
You might get those symptoms if it was leaking air in the intake area.
Perhaps you missed something when you did the reeds.
Have you confirmed all jets and passages are clear?
Are the floats set right?

Re: bigger jets?

the jets are what evinrude shows for a 50hp. i cleaned the carbs really good but i guess there could still be something there. i adjusted the floats to the specs in my manual using the required gauge. i seen in my manual where it could be a leaking intake manifold. i reused the old gasket but only because it didn't rip or anything when i took it apart. guess they could be leaking. just odd to me that it runs fine when you use the primer. that makes me think it can't be a fuel pump or filter seems like its in the carbs whether they still got some gunk in them or it's the jets. also i don't know if it's worth mentioning but this motor has a jet pump on it rather than a traditional prop and lower unit.

You may want to contact the Chris Carson Co and see what they have to say. I have heard of re-jetting when you install reeds other than oem.

Re: bigger jets?

I pulled it down to the power head today. Pulled the reed cages and installed a new intake gasket. Pulled the carbs apart and found some junk in one. Thinking I might need to get some fresh fuel lines. When I started this project I pulled the outer part if the fuel pump and the screen was full of wood looking fibers.cleaned it and installed. When I rebuilt the carbs I removed the plug in the carb that allows access to those gallies. When reinstalled I didn't use a sealer on them. Should I have? It started but I didn't have time to put it in the water this evening so I'm at a stand still until this weekend.

Re: bigger jets?

Still bring some help after cleaNing everything once again I'm still having the same issue. Runs fine on a hose and at idle in the water. It stats to take off then falls on its face but will run fine if you it with the keys. The fuel Bulb is staying hard. I'm at a lose. Should I check the fuel pump? seems like that wouldn't be a problem if paying the primer picks it up. What about the plugs on the bottom of the carb ? I removed then when I cleaned everything but when I installed the new ones I just punched them in?

Still sounds like the carbs are clogged up. If you did not replace all of the fuel lines, then now is the time. They disintegrate from the inside and will keep clogging the carbs. The carbs need to be disassembled, soaked, all passages cleaned out with aerosol carb cleaner, and blown out with compressed air. The lead shots and plugs do not need sealant.

What kind of solution you recommend to soak in? If I'm doing it should I get a new primer bulb and all? What's your opinion on the brand Walmart sells? If I find out its a fuel pump should I rebuild or replace? I guess now would be a good time to get a bigger fuel tank I've wanted but the wife wont be happy
