Okay cool. Yeah I also noticed water leaking from under the lower cowl area (the area that the cowl sits on) so maybe that gasket is leaking too. We will see what Nordin says but perhaps I should change it while I'm in there

Try to check where the leakage is located.
If not have to change the gasket between the motor leg (mid le
g) and the power head do not do it.
As I said before and it is from my own experience the spacer plate has two shock mounts.
The studs are vulcanized in the rubber and when you try to remove the nut you maybe twist the stud in the rubber and it get loose.
It maybe twist BUT sometime it not twist.
These shock mounts are not cheap.......108 dollar each.

Okay I hear ya Nordin. I won't replace the gasket if it's not bad. I'll check before I pull the powerhead.

Replace the gaskets.----Fix the leak.------If leakage gets worse and water enter the carburetor it could scrap your fine engine.

Yup good copy on that. I won't even think about putting it on the water until the leak is fixed. I've been keeping the cowl off too while looking for leaks, and just long enough to see it. So far the leak is 100% coming through the gasket between the block and spacer plate. I got the 3-gakset kit too in case I can get to the others or feel they need to be replaced.

Hey everyone, so I'm now going in an attempting to pull the powerhead. How many bolts am I to remove? I've removed the 5 or so really large bolts. There must be more right?

Just got the powerhead off. Sorry Nordin but I did separate the motor from the mid leg. However, the shock mounts on mine, the bolts are not vulcanized in rubber, but instead have a plate they screw into that is vulcanized. Do these gaskets need any rtv or can they just be installed dry?

Also, I opened the reed plate in the recirc system. Full of junk. Should I check anything else while the powerhead is off?

Okey, good if you got it loose without the rubber mounts going bad.
Sometime there are no problem to remove them sometime some of them separate the rubber from the steel plate.
Clean the surface of the mid leg and the surface of the adapter plate/power head.
Use some liquid gasket just to hold the gasket in place when putting the power head back to the midleg.
Just some spots will be enough, I usually use Permatex Aviation form a gasket no. 3.

Okay awesome Nordin thank you. My leak seems to coming from between the spacer plate and the powerhead. Any tricks getting that off? I see about 7 or so bolts there. Also, my recirc was super dirty. Anything on that I should inspect?

Look at the explode diagram at Crowley Marine.
Looks like there is no gasket between the power head and the adapter plate.
If the leak is there you have to check if there are some defect at the surfaces.
Pull the cover (dog bone) of the recirc system, clean the screens and put the cover back.

Gotcha, did that before I pulled it apart. I was certaim that's where my leak was. Mine did have a gasket between the head and the plate. Okay copy on the recirc. Mine was filthy. Full of bits of varnished fuel and carbon. Are there check valves on these 88 50hps? Everything is back together at the moment.

Nice to hear that you stopped the leak.
Yes there are check valves in the recirc system.
There are two typical reed valves under the cover.
