Re: big motor small boat......

the transom looks really good....but you wont know till you get the core samples done.

one thing.....by adding that extra board on the transom......it will be too thick for the motor clamps.......transoms are a certain thickness....its one of the only real "laws" of a rebuild.

.....the other thing is....even after you get that new peice in there.....you still need to do a full layer of glass under the splashwell where the knee is.....a layer running from the side of the bout....around the transom to the other side....
with out this wrap.....the motor could just rip right off.....

there is a tremendous amount of strain but on a transom with a approved sized motor. you have doubled that motor size and tripled the amount of strain...now add a skier.....then a skier doin a full one ski cut across the wake with his sholder in the water and thirty foot rooster tails.

the stress on the transom is now 5 times what it is designed for....its dangerous.......you really need to re-inforce it.

it will only fail when you really need it.......and it could be catistrophic.

keep the pics comin.........by the way....do you guys get corona beer down there? :D

cheers

That is a cool boat!
I am generally fine with overpowering a boat, and figured the same with yours......until I saw a picture of the inside of the hull. This boat barely has stringers! I am not sure there is much you could do to make it truly safe. That hull must twist like crazy when it hits waves. Would getting a different hull to put your motor on be out of the question? Where I live boat's without motors are very cheep.
Good Luck!

Re: big motor small boat......

ok guys,

i have another day done and more photos to come.... ill get them up when i can. i have glassed in the whole lot with heaps of resen and sheets of glass. i have been useing realy thick matt with layers of chop strand in between to help it stick. so far i have used 2kg of resen and im nearly done. i will be getting some more on teh way home tonight as i need to make up some bog. im finished with teh glass for now and will be sanding and flow coating tonight. then i will fit up the outer ally plate and then i have some angle to put over the top to tidy it all up. the angle sahould also pick up the top motor mount aswell so thats a bonus. oh yeah ill be getting the new longer stainless mount bolts aswell. and i might move the motor up one hole aswell.... first because a little more speed is allways nice and two because with the new stronger transom it is also a little higher anyway and dont realy want to drill new holes. im rushing to get the motor back on as teh hoist is borrowed from the local mechanic so im keen to get that back to him. after thats back on ill be packing the inside of the boat where the transom joins teh cap with bog or glueing paste as its called to try to tie it all in even better. photos tonight or tomorrow. and yes we have been drinking coronas while working on the boat.....

The Stiletto (I have one) was designed originally as a ski race boat to take a 115hp.
That said, some of the Australian barefoot records in the eighties were set using 200hp.
Mine in standard trim with a 115hp will see 58mph with four people on board as well as all ski gear and eskies.

No offense but why ask for peoples opinions if you are not going to take the advice and do it right? On the up side I like the boat and the motor does look cool back there, I hope you stay safe and no one gets hurt.
