hope you guys can help me out here. I recently purchased a new starter for my outboard, problem I have is that when I removed the bolt the threads inside the hole pealed out also. I think it was epoxied in...

Is it best to try and re-tap the hole or put an insert into the hole and thread my bolt into that.

I would say the repair would depend on the amount of material surrounding the existing hole. You can do a helicoil type insert if there is enough meat...then sometimes you can get away with moving up to a larger size screw....

Go to an auto parts store and take the bolt for the starter with you. Get a heli coil kit for the same bolt size and thread pitch. The kit will have the correct size drill bit and tap with it. Pick up some lock tight while your there to seat the coil. Easy job just be sure you drill the hole straight is about the only thing that could go wrong for you.
