I just acquired a free charger 154 with a 120hp outboard Chrysler motor. No idea if it runs or even close. Right away, I would like to swap it for a 90hp or less. What brands would hook up the easiest? I've seen mercs on them.
Even though the Chrysler 120 was more around 100 hp, I would agree you might want to down size due to insurance reasons. Look for a Force model, of the 1994 and older vintage. Force and Chrysler connect the same.
Can get others to work but might need to change some things.
Thank you for your responses. Does anyone know the weight difference between a 120 and the 85 or 90? Also is there a link for motor removal? I thought it was easier or maybe I'm over thinking.
I would get a Yamaha 4 stroke with fuel injectors , it's the finest outboard on earth, Did I just get in trouble again..
The link for motor removal, is back the motor under something higher, put the trailer tongue on the ground,tie some straps around the motor connect it to the building above the motor, remove all the bolts, now raise the tongue up as high as possible .A mod told me that.thanks.
Buying a Yam?? He would have to change the controls, cables, instruments and need to drill new holes and fill the old..
4strokes are usually heavier too.
The 1990 and up might have Mercury Stern brackets and need to fill the old holes and re-drill.
Try to get the one on there to run.
You won't get much better gas economy until you get way newer.
The Canadian rating is 70 and US is 90. Since my 120 is rated at about 100 hp only, it hardly seems worth it to swap. The boat guy said to just change the decal in case get checked. I would think a 70 is much smaller although I haven't seen any
Going to test motor out tomorrow. First off: where is the drain and filler for the bottom end? I searched but nothing like this configuration. I found the vent.
We have a 125hp and the fill is about three inchs to the side of the vent.
This is where you have to be careful, the drain on a 125hp is on the very bottom on the front of the skeg.
Don't take out the pin for the gear shift arm on starboard side on 125hp, there's around one post a month that does this, it's a big bummer to fix. .
I found a bottom drain and the vent. Is it possible to put too much oil in if I filled to the vent? The very bottom is where its draining from. I can't find any fill hole. There is another screw type but is a different size and at the very bottom right on the pic. I read that there is one that should never be touched.
It would seem control cables are the only thing preventing a direct swap with anything out there. I have to rewire and only have a working speedo. What would prevent any aftermarket gauges from working? This is just hypothetical if the 120 needs real work.
If you can get them wired in and installed in the correct locations not reason they will not work. Tachometers can be iffy only because you need to find one which works with your motor.
