So do you use monofilament or one of the braided
lines, for no stretch. Spider wire.. Trilen..
Stren, Fusion ,fluorocarbon, Dacron.. Duck decoy
line... :D

Re: Best Fishing Line

I fish fresh water all the time and rarely have a heavier line then 17 LB test on the spool. Mostly 10 and 12 pound for the lakes I fish.I have good luck with Stren original and stren heavy cover mono.Berkley Trilene is a good line for me also. Tried the spider wire and the fire line, didn't like em.

---------------
Flathead

I tried spectra braid for the first time about 8 years ago and haven't looked back.

Longer casts with memory-free line that puts every twitch of the lure or bait right into your fingers, instant hookset. When bobber fishing the slack floats allowing minimum to take up for hooksetting.

I can go on and on. The main downside is that you can get the wrong idea about abrasion and forget to cut it back every now and then.

Re: Best Fishing Line

I’ve used almost all of the major brands of mono and braid. At first I liked the Spiderwire braid because of its superior sensitivity. For worm fishing it is the best. But for other types of fishing like spinerbaits, crankbaits, and topwater, you need a lot more stretch in your line to keep a constant tension on the fish. The braid will pull it out of the fish’s mouth or not let him take it. So I use Stren Original on all my rods. It’s the best all around line and very strong. It has a lot of memory which is not a problem because when it starts to twist, just replace it. It is cheap.

I have been using Whiplash for the last few years for anything from walleye, bass, northern, and musky. However I have heard that it is no longer made. I will have to try the new Spiderwire Stealth. Small diameter, high strength. I have found Whiplash superior to Fireline and Fusion. Fusion is ok but does not compare to good braids.
Dman

I am going to try one of the coated braids this year. Strength and sensitivity of braids with the smooth, low friction surface of mono. I have been impressed with how salt water light tackle fishermen swear by Power Pro.

I would rather let the fast action rod tip keep constant pressure on the fish. There I can see what is going on at the end of the line.

Re: Best Fishing Line

I use both mono and braided line. I like the
performance of mono when trolling ,it has a bit
of stretch or give when a fish takes the lure
or bait. some of the fish have soft mouthes and
it doesn't take much on the hook set to tear the
hook out. When I am jigging especially in
deepwater
over 40 ft I prefer the braided lines. you cant
beat the sensitivity of a no stretch line when
a fish is just mouthing the bait. JB is right, you
can feel every thing. So I am spooled with both
types of line when I head out.

Ande Tournament mono on everything... I do want to try Power Pro just to satisfy my curiosity...

Here's something I've always wondered about... Why is it that a freshwater bass fisherman will go after a 4lb fish with 25lb line, and a saltwater flats fisherman will go after a 25lb fish (or bigger)with 4lb line?...

JB, what do you mean "no stumps or rock"?? Ok, I'll give ya the 400 yards of line...

I'll use my heavy tackle (6 or 8 lb. test)in a mangrove, oyster bar, and barniacle infested swamp of a mess with a 20lb piece of flourocarbon leader about 24" long so the monsters can't chew thru it as easy while hunting for snook and other such drag pullin' critters... And then theres those barnicle infested dock pilings that will cut you off if you look at them wrong... :D

Seems to me like going after a 4lb. fish with 20lb. line just is'nt sporting....

Guess I'm just sick or something... :D Ahhh... The sound of a spinning reel with the drag just singing a tune make me ol'e heart flutter.. ZZZINNNNGGGGG...

Re: Best Fishing Line

I mostly change my monofilement every season.
The suns rays are hard on normal mono. line can
break down after only a short period after being
exposed to ultraviolet rays. The new fluorocarbon
lines are not effected by ultraviolet rays and
can remain undamaged for hundreds of years if
exposed to the sun. So make sure if you use
fluorocarbon line you don't through it away on the water or on land because it will last forever.

Re: Best Fishing Line

I tried one of the braids when it first came out. It did not work well. It go a bunch of abrasions and I lost one good lure on a cast. I don't know wher eit went but always figure I will step on it sometime. I use Berkley Sensithin. I can say the bad thing about it is the twist. Maybe it is time to try one of the braids now. What is good for low line twist? I use spinning reals for everything currently.

Re: Best Fishing Line

Snapperbait I can tell you why and it has nothing to do with rocks or anything else cutting or abraiding the line. Bass fishermen learn everything they know from these TV shows and magazines that tell you how to fish like a pro. Well one thing they don't mention is why a pro uses heavy line. It has nothing to do with how much fun he has but how many fish he can catch in how short a time. You need 20# line to get them in quick so you can unhook him and either put him in the livewell for tourniment weigh-in or throw him back and go to catch a bigger one. I feel that bass fishermen would have more fun and catch more fish if they took a page from our fellow S/W anglers and use lighter line. Personally I have caught many 8# bass and a few 10# bass on 6# line. I have also caught more than a few 3# and 4# fish on 2# line (of course these were fish that hit small baits intended for bream or crappie). My biggest rod only has 30# on it and it is for catfish (and other species as I fish S/W too) and I usually rig it with baits that only a fish 20# or bigger could take. Last year I caught a cat over 30# on 10# line and had more than my share of fun while only worring a little because I was in an area with a lot of downed trees.
BTW I use Berkley trilene on all my rods except my fly rods and there it is a Scientific Anglers tapered leader with a loop tied in the end to which I add a 2' piece of Berkley Vanish because of the clear water situations I usually face when using them. It does make a difference and if I needed to I would use it as a leader on my other rods for the same reasons.

Re: Best Fishing Line

when using baitcasting gear (99% of the time) i use Stren lo-vis green 12lb test. I use this on my jig rod, crankbait rod, etc, etc. This line has always done good for me. It can handle just about anything. Ive caught up to 25lb carp(on accident) on this line without a problem

Re: Best Fishing Line

I really like the new sprecta Braids with a few exceptions.

My very favorite is Cortland's Sprectron but getting hard to find been using on my deep water bottom fishing rods for over ten years and has never broke or came untied, leader 2/3 of main line size. Even though fish deep in the rocks all the time have only cut 10 feet off of the rods one time.

Also like Cabela's Ripcord SI snd SI plus but high priced.

Like a new line Fins Prt Braid very well also. Cheaper than most, small size and also IFGA if after a record.

Offshore Anglers Magibraid Spectra also a ok line and lower priced than most but when they add the color not as even as most, may find some clumps of ink or paint.

I will NOT use Spiderwire, only super braid I have seen that will come untied or break even when useing a lower pound test leader. Only Superbraid line we have lost fish on due to line failure.

For leaders We use P Line Floroclear for line senstive fish like tuna or trout. It is a Copolymer line with a Fouorocarbon coating to make it invisible in water

On the freshwater/saltwater subject, I'll never forget what a friend from North Lousiana said the first time he saw the Gulf of Mexico, "My gosh!!Look at all that water! And not a stump in it!!"

Re: Best Fishing Line

I use various lines for various applications. Example: love Fireline for freshwater Carolina rigging using 2'+ flurocarbon leader. Can carry alot of line on the spool due to small diameter yet have great feel and strenght. This works well in salt too, just change the leader to #20 mono. On the other hand: when fishing jigs for whites , I go with #8 Stren mono. Get strenght and strech, but can still break off it it gets snagged. Only manufactures I trust are Fireline/Gorilla braids(had bad experiences with spiderwire) and Stren for mono(Trilene line is a crapshoot, sometimes good, sometimes junk).
To each there own... ;)

Re: Best Fishing Line

I may be missing some fish by not using certain lines and such, but when I hook-up, I don't have to worry about breaking off. :D
I use Berkley Trilene Big Game on all my rods in different sizes and colors up to 40lb.

For me it's Berkley PHOTOCHROMIC{The Gold Line} but this year I don't see it in the Bass Pro Catalog.I have used it for many years now.
