Been on a serious weight kicking plan lately. Sooooo..... Been eating like a rabbit. Lots of salad, carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, apples, etc. To keep the food interesting, I have been rotating the dressings I dip the raw veggies in. So far my favorites are 7 Seas mix it yourself Italian, A&P house brand Balsamic Vinaigrette, and their "low calorie" Ranch.

They keep me munching like a rodent trying to chew its way into your boat in storage..... :D

Anyway, if you have a favorite dressing, either home made or commercial, share it with us!

Re: Best/Favorite Salad Dressing???

Here's what I do: I take any low-cal salad dressing, very much like what you are using, but I kick it up a notch with spices.

GREAT spices for adding to salads are red pepper, ginger, garlic or onion powder and whatever else looks right. Add some parmesan sprinkle cheese.

Now, some really easy ones are those "Grill Mates" type of seasoning blends. Add that to a salad and it's transformed!

And... my real secret weapon is OLD BAY....

If you're looking for healthy, I believe I have found some honey-mustards to be a little less deadly than other varieties.

Re: Best/Favorite Salad Dressing???

i usually go with a dark or raspberry balsamic vinagarette.

fresh ground pepper with it. may try the red peppers, never tried that on salad, i enjoy crushed peppers on eveyrthing else.

you realize of course you've taken a bunch of manly men from talking about crocheting to talking about salads for watching the waistline. LOL

Re: Best/Favorite Salad Dressing???

For a dip try 6-8 parts ranch dressing, 1 part honey, good shot of dill, and a small shot of mustard powder (as everything due to taste). Great veggie dip.

I have fallen in love with this salad.
mixed spring greens (assorted lettuces) chop up strawberrys and pear, small diced pieces of red onion, cayenne roasted pecans
(Whip up 1 egg white add sugar cayenne powder cinnemon, salt. add pecans and bake)
Blue cheese, and top with rasberry vinegrette. WOW.

Spinich salad, bacon and egg, mushrooms, red onions, sauce is miracle whip and red wine vineger (should be a bit more on the bitter side/the leaves and other stuff will influence the vinegrette due to the base)
mustard powder sugar, salt, pepper.

Enjoy

Aunt Sadie's (it is currently homemade, but there are asperations to go national with a new brand, so keep your eyes open on the web or in stores, it is some pretty awesome stuff) and Branding Iron (another homemade ... will have to look up the file and post it here if anyone is interested).

Hidden valley buttermilk ranch in the dry pack, you make it w buttermilk and moyo,it is not real healthy compared to oil and vineger dressings, but alittle goes along way. deadly on fried thin sliced squash and fried okra!I like Paul Newmans balsamic vinigret on salads and vegees too. and it makes a fantastic marinade for venison.24hrs at least.grill over med high heat.and baste if you like.

Far from traditional dressings and dips, I like to dip raw veggies in lime juice with just enough honey in it to take the edge off.

Ken's Steak House makes a raspberry walnut vinigarette that is really good. I buy Romaine hearts, grill boneless/skinless chicken breasts on the Foreman grill and put the usual "salad fixin's" in with it. It makes a good dinner salad - you get some protein from the meat, but its lean, plus you get the veggies too.

In fact .... I'm eating one right now!

Its also an inexpensive meal. Three of the chicken breasts at Wallyworld are about five bucks. The salad items needed for three salads are probably about the same, so you can make three of them for ten bucks.

Re: Best/Favorite Salad Dressing???

Mark,

I like just about any Ranch for dipping, and hot bacon dressing for spinach salads ( but that could hardly be called low -cal!:D)

On the lighter side, here is my favorite homemade vinaigrette for leafy salads, I call it my garlic special.

A bit of onion thinly sliced onion, saute in basil olive oil. Bring in some ( I like LOTS) freshly minced garlic for just a bit,,, . Reduce heat . Add fresh ground pepper to taste, perhaps a pinch of dried oregano and salt as well. Let it set in the skillet a few minutes, then mix it all up in a bowl with some balsamic vinegar.

Drizzle over leafy greens to taste, really great with some more pepper ground over the top.

Re: Best/Favorite Salad Dressing???

Its hard to beat a plain french vinaigrette.

Heres a really simple creamy caesar.

Put 4 cloves of garlic and 2 yolks plus one egg in a processor,
blast it , scrape the bottom and blast it again for a minute to puree the garlic.
Add 2 cups of oil very very slowly, just a drizzle to start then add faster when it starts to thicken. It will thicken up like mayonaise.
Add 1/4 cup lemon juice.
Small handfull of parmesan.
salt/papper/cayenne to taste.
If you have anchovy paste add a spoonful.
Now thin it with water to a heavy cream consistency.
It will thicken more when chilled.

I would not use "balsamic" anything that comes from a supermkt, its just trash, its not balsamic anything. Genuine balsamic is over $100 a pint.
Most of the off the shelf dressings are very bad, full of corn sweetener and Gum binders sodium, light just means they added water.
