Re: Best Boating Magazines

Every year at the Boat Show, I get a few free subscriptions. I am not in the market for a mega yacht, or a sailboat, which most of the 'boating' magazines seem to be about.

The BEST boating related magazine I have found is the TowBoat US magazine that you get with the annual towing package. They don't really sell you anything, have articles about people and their adventures, and highlight some of the new gadgets that are out there. I also found Southern Boating to be decent. It has advertorials, and the back half is real estate for sale, but the few articles are good.

For fishing, albeit they also tend to be advertorials, I read Florida Sportsman, Saltwater Fishing, and Sport Fisherman. Just got a sub to F&S, but I expect that to not be really something I'll read too often.

+1 on BoatUS/TowBoat mag. Always glad when it arrives; always wish it was thicker!

For some reason I get the BoatUS magazine once a year if I am lucky, that's shortly after I renew the insurance.

For local stuff to Indiana, you could try Lakeland Boating. It is about half advertising like the rest of them are but it is centered on the Great Lakes.

I like Boating magazine, a range of articles from DYI to boat reviews.

+1 on classic boating. Another great one is "Rudder". Available through the ACBS.

I also get "Power and Motoryacht", now "PMY". I just love their top 100 lists. Dropped everything else. You really have to become very familiar with the writer/reviewers style to garner the truth. Got to learn to "read between the lines".

"Boating" is the only one left that has any articles at all re. smaller boats. "Trailer Boats" went out of business this past Summer.

I get "boating" now, I had trailer boats and it was a total advertisment, most issues were useless.

"Boating" absorbed the subscription holders of "Trailer Boats". TB was simply an awesome magazine for about 35 of its 40 years in business. When the original publisher sold the business and it was taken over by a conglomerate, that's when it went downhill. The last few years each month was maybe 35 pages, down from about 80 when it was in its heyday.
