Just this year got back into the boating world this year after many years of being away. I would like to subscribe to a good boating magazine or two to enrich my knowledge (along with this Forum) on boats and equipment. What magazines do you guys like and suggest. Being in Indiana, I am not that intrested in offshore or saltwater boating, no offense, but primarily fresh water on inland lakes.

Re: Best Boating Magazines

Boating Mag and Trailer Boats are decent.

I've not come across any boating mag that was on par with auto, truck or hot rod type magazines.

When you get right down to it, because boating encompasses so much diversity, internet sites (e.g., iboats) work best. The magazine format falls way short -- there's just too much diversity in boats. Cars tend to be similar, as do passenger trucks, so periodicals do well with them.

But for inland, smaller boats, Trailer Boats is okay.

There are very very few magazines left. What you have now are advitorials. You buy ads and we will write good things about you. If you **** off Brunswick you are out of business period. Don't believe. Show me a BAD article about a new boat in the last 20 years.

Maybe, maybe and independent builder. But other than that a Bayliner is TOP OF THE LINE.

"Boating" is the only one left that has any articles at all re. smaller boats. "Trailer Boats" went out of business this past Summer.

Every one I've ever read was crap. Love the word advertorial, that pretty much sums it up.

BoatTest magazine. They're also online @ boattest.com. The have full tests, including speeds and gallons per hour, on every boat in every style. Best place to look when you're wanting to purchase a new or used boat.

I second the "Boating" recommendation. Of the few that remain it's probably the best.

I buy boatest for the fuel consumption ratings & fuel tank sizes.

I drive approaching a dock or WOT as soon as possible. I have emptied a 5 L V8 fuel tank in a morning. :)

I was upset.

I agree they are all "advitorials" but some have good tips and advice buried in them. The trick is to get a subscription that is so cheap, it makes the worthless worthwhile. "Saltwater Fisherman" is that way (I know the OP doesn't want that one but FBO others).

Thanks to greedy owners in everything. There is very little new information about anything in life. They simply resplice the same pictures & DVD scenes in a different sequence.

Direct TV Military Channel is a prime example. Documentaries of a war have stuff spliced in from WW I to the present.

Show the commericals !!!

I had just bought my first new boat in the Summer of 1971. On my way home from the dealer I stopped in a drugstore and found Trailerboats volume 1 issue 1. To my surprise, the very boat I just bought was tested that month and featured on the cover.

I became a charter subscriber that day and I currently own every single issue they ever published, all bound and indexed by year.

In subsequent years I hardly saw them on news stands. I think they survived mostly by subscriptions.

They specialized in only boats that could be trailered. Although you might say they are (were) advitorials as well (and maybe never said bad things about what they tested), they DID provide all the data so that you could read between the lines and make informed decisions of your own.

I had the pleasure of meeting their publisher and technical editor at a Stingray open house a few years ago. I candidly complained to them at the time that the magazine had gone downhill in recent years (after the company was sold by the original publisher and picked up by a conglomerate). Its just a matter of dollars and cents today. Like many of the newspapers, the (free) internet is driving the printed media out of business.

In any event, I learned a lot from them over the past 40 years - my own tests always confirmed their results. Sorry to see them go!

The best of them all was Power Boat Reports, unfortunatly it went down a few years ago. They were strictly subscription and had no advertising. These boys pulled no punches and p#ssed off more than one manufacurer. I have about 5 years worth on file, exelent reference material. Here on the west coast Pacific Yachting is about the best, lots of ads though and every boat they revew is perfect, NOT.

Re: Best Boating Magazines

Goolge boat magazines and see what you come up with, probably more online material than paper magazines but that is the way of the world now and as everyone else has said take anything you read in them with a grain or 3 of salt.

We get Pontoon & Deckboat at work and I swear someone could make a boat that sunk every hour on the hour and they would write a glowing review about it if the company bought ad space but they do have alot of articles about boating stuff too.

Re: Best Boating Magazines

Tough business periodicals is (Yoda speak).

The mags needs material; they need to be objective, yet they need to sell ads to the very companies they will criticize. And boating is still a niche market with niche markets and subcultures.

I'd say the last five rags I've read on boating (actual glossy pages in hand) were local things I grabbed at marinas that covered the local fishing scene, tournament news and poker runs.

I found Trailer Boat online and spent most of my workday reading old archived articles and actually found alot of useful information . When I clicked on subscribe I was told that they went out of business in June of this year. Too bad.
