PS, all above should be used with a downrigger
or a dipsy-diver so you can get down to where
the big ones are this time of yr. 20-30 feet?
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: Best Bait

Good luck to you next month, JB.
Been a few years since I've been there.

gonefishin - well said. I agree entirely! Some days a plain hook tipped with bait and a few split shot are all one needs.

-forgot to add that it does sound like we finned, as you say, some of the same waters at some point in time and would certainly enjoy kickin' back up at Leech with you all in June. Sounds great!

Since you're into gators, a little adventure on the mighty Chippewa Flowage might be intersesting to ya and maybe a few other members here also ... that is ifn' some of ya are interested.
No trolling on the Chip. tho - deemed 'quality' gator fishery.

MY - dips -n- riggers sound like Erie talk. Hear things have been doin' real well for fish 10lbs + out by you lately. Nice lookin' Musky I might add .. that's gotta be his lucky shirt :)

take care all.

Yup, the Flowage does contain some big gators and 'eyes. There are a ton a great gator and 'eye lakes near Hayward and the surrounding areas. Round Lake, just down the road from the Flowage, Grindstone, Long Lake in Washburn Co. Shell Lake. Yellow Lake in Burnett Co. And for another great Musky lake, try Bone Lake in Polk Co.
And if you want bass, try Clam Lake, just outside of Siren. A 8+ lbs was pulled out about 2 weeks ago.

Dman

Re: Best Bait

i'm a Canuck......up here when trolling i use a worm harness, shartruse with a double hook. You can buy 'em at Walmart, there is a Walmart where you live right?.......LOL
Attach a bell sinker to a leader off your rod line, off that same leader clip on yer worm harness with a dew worm, and troll. If you know your water, it shouldn't take long to stock up on pickerel/walleye. If you get stripped (worm)often by perch, & bluegill, use an artifical worm, Berkley "Gulp" bait worms are the best to save rebaiting often. Its the twirl of the bait that will get'em snappin!!!
tightlines,
Conchecko

Re: Best Bait

Parts for my motor are coming in tuesday so I should be back in the water on Saturday. Wife is going to kill me when she sees the gander mountian bill. Funny there was no problems going with composite materials for the deck which added over twice the cost for the deck. A hundred spent at gander and I get to hear about how poor we are.

Re: Best Bait

Argh. I know the feeling about waiting for "parts" to the motor.
Sort of going off topic, but I bought my boat in winter time, it had a 50hp mercury outboard, but it wouldnt even crank, so I just bought a nice trolling motor & used that all year. I stayed on smaller lakes that I COULD troll around & I was happy :)

Then this thread came along & reminded me of the monster walleye & northerns that I used to catch back in the day. So I took the boat in last Tuesday. Good news is I think the motor is OK, but I'm waiting on a stupid timing belt to say for sure. So this is the first weekend I haven't went fishing all summer. Going nuts over here.

Back on topic: I tied one of the strata spoons on my casting setup last Tuesday before taking the boat it. Went to cast it.....and I don't know what happened, but the line snapped & the spoon ended up about a 100 yards away in a big splash.....
Guess I need to respool that reel :p

Re: Best Bait

Well Eurolarva, at the risk of adding yet another post re baiting walleyes I will tell you how we do it up north. We use a bottom bouncer weight to get the tackle to bottom where the walleye hang out. Using a 3-4' leader on the bottom bouncer (BB), I attach a chareuse or white or brass or silver spinner with beads in flame orange of yellow (about 1' from the hook)and finally a single hook with a minnow. Alternately I attach a yellowish crankbait or a pink bell spinner with treble hooks. The idea is to get the lure/bait down to bottom to get MR. Wally. I'm sure people in other parts do a similar thing. Give it a try. ;)

Re: Best Bait

Amen Snowshoe! Perch colored spinnerbaits work mint! Chatreuse/dark green is most effect spinner color i have found, with a worm/or minnow........if action slows, drop that minnow over the side on a snell hook just off the bottom........that way everyone at dinner table gets a taste of Pickerel! :) Or at least thats the way we Canucks do it........LOL!!
--------------------------------------------------
tightlines,
Conchecko

Re: Best Bait

I picked up a stratus spoon and a shad rap (perch) 16 foot diver and a mimic minnow on a spinner rig. I am going tomorrow to try some of these lures. I will pick up probably Jumbo leeches at the bait store tomorrow but with them I will be feeding the crappies. I put fresh batteries in the GPS and have printed out this thread. I guess I am as ready as can be. I also picked up some lures that look like the stuff in the erie dearie kit that Mellow Yellow posted. Man I am excited. I am going to a good walleye lake next weekend that the inlaws have a cabin on called ten mile lake outside of Dalton Minnesota. I need to practice some of these lures so when I fish with my brother in law I can outfish him. Once again thanks to everyone that shared their fishing secrets.

Re: Best Bait

Well I caught one walleye about the size of a cigar. Kept 15 nice size bluegills. The crappies were as deep as 35 ft. Stole the leeches from down there. Didnt get a lick on the statas spoon or the Rapela. I talked to the bait shop guy. He says they have not had much luck with walleye for the last two weeks. The ones they are getting have been shallow in less then 8 ft of water. He also mentioned this lake is a tough lake to get walleye in because they have plenty of forage already. I am okay with that. We will be eating fish tonight.

Re: Best Bait

Yeah all 15 were nice. Four of us ate them for supper and there was plenty. I am hitting a nice walleye lake next weekend just north of Alexandria. I should have better luck up there.
