I fish in Minnesota and have caught some walleyes by accident. I mainly get them with a beetlespin trolling or casting for bluegills or bass. My question is I want to troll for walleye however the lake I fish has lots of small crappies that eat anything I troll with. I mainly use leeches and fathead minnows. Is there another live bait I should use that crappies wont mess with? I have tried shiners but have problems keeping them alive. Any help or tips would be appreciated. Typically I troll using floating jig heads, jigs and spinner rigs.
Thanks

DANG PERCH!! ... errr .. Crappie's. :D

eurolarva - where are you in Minnesota? I basically spent my summers there as a kid from the Citys west to Alex. and North. Mostly in the surrounding Hibbing area (Iron Range) and North.

Spent a lot of time on the water, backwards, 'draggin' bait(s)!! ;)

Lake of the Woods (family cabin) North of Baudette on one mile gap just south of Cyrus Resort, Kabetogama, Swan, Leech, Big/Little Winnie, Buck, Alex., Rice, Sand, ....blah blah blah ...

a lot of tactics out there .. depends on the forage, hatches and a whole lotta other things. What bodies of water are you targeting 'eyes on?

-barlow-

Re: Best Bait

I fish around the Taylors Falls area. Small town called lindstrom. My dream is to live in Alexandria but my wife said if we moved up there she would divorce me because I would be fishing all the time. Another member here Gonfishn has a lake home up by Leech and we had a small Iboats get together there. Muskyone from Wisconsin, Neumanns from the Brainard area and myself fished with Gonfishn. We didnt catch much but had a blast. Keep it in mind around next June it will happen again

Re: Best Bait

Ya know my favorite EL..A Smörgåsbord which consists of a floater Jig with some Wt. about 8-10" above..Attach a large crawler and a jumbo leach and slow troll..At night go closer to shore and day time a little deeper..Keeps the smaller ones from attempting the impossible..

Been doing real goos on the saugers here with that method..Next June come on up Barlow...plenty of room..Looks like you and I have fined the same lakes at one time or another..

Re: Best Bait

When we used to fish for walleye, we have great luck throwing a Strata Spoon, however we never trolled for them. Just threw 'em out & jigged them back to the boat, bouncing off the bottom.
It worked great for walleyes, pike, and the occasional snagged carp. http://www.basspro.com/servlet/cata...5453&hvarTarget=search&hvarAID=&cmCat=3333408

Now to go off topic, how do you troll for bluegill/crappie? Any tips on this? What kind of rig do you need? Lures? What kind of structure are you fishing?

Re: Best Bait

Thanks guys for the help. MY I am using spinner rigs. Not as fancy as the kit you have posted but that looks interesting. Will a walleye go after a sucker minnow? That is about the only thing I can think of these crappies might not attack. Skunked again I will buy one or two of those spoons. Do you dress the hooks with live bait or just toss as is.

I use a small beetlespin in about 4 ft of water for trolling panfish. Yellow and black work the best for me but water here is murky. Clear water I stick with orange and black or mostly black. Real slow troll just fast enough for the spinner to spin. I use bigger ones like my avatar except yellow with a black stripe. I catch lots of crappie with that one. I went last saturday and kept 16 nice size blue gills all with the small beetle spin.

Good luck

Re: Best Bait

Thanks euro. I've been meaning to buy some rod holders & try this whole trollin' thing. I may try it tommorow when I go.... The hot colors for me have been a black head w/ green tail. I use a fish-n-spin, it's like a beetle spin but has a willow-type blade. Crappie love 'em ;) This is a clear lake though.

About the Strata Spoons go, just toss them as is. No live bait needed for these.
Just throw it, let it go to the bottom, give it a good jerk, reel in the slack & let it settle back to the bottom. Repeat.
Edit: I forget which size strata spoon I got I'll check w/ I get home from work.

Re: Best Bait

hey guys next year June count me in as of now... sounds like a good time no matter what what happens! Thanx for the invite! hmmmm ... I'll bring the Shlitz..lol :D :p

Well Euro, After looking on the map I found ya. Have to say I'm not familiar with your surrounding lakes and their make-up but, as far as an arial view I'm guessing that the Lindstrom chain is full of depth changes, weed beds and underwater bars and humps but, thems just a hunch. Going on this 'hunch', this time of year I'd concentrate on 8-15' of water on breaks relating to bottom structure. This being said, if fishing alone, use three rods rigged differently... one spinner rig with a #4 colorado blade for more 'thump' (in orange or green) set up with a Jumbo Leech or medium Fat head. Second, would be a Rapala, either a Shad Rap, Tail Dancer or Countdown in silver, gold or perch. Long line straight back roughly 40-60'. Last but, not least, would be a floating rig on a bottom bouncer, Lindy's No-Snag or tied to a three-way with a 8-12" light mono dropper to a bell sinker or such.
I'd start out at around 1.5 gps bouncing the throttle up in incraments to 2.2 gps (maybe faster) while searching for takers. If no takers, drop it down from 1.5 to under 1.0 refering to my first post 'backwards' if you have to or as gonfishn stated 'slow troll'. Depends if your boat is capable of those slower speeds.
If you run into fish either throw a marker out or hit a way point on the gps and then start doing 'hot laps' in the aera. Key in on specifics: speed, turn ratio, which bait. Most of all specifics as to where that bait was, (line out), depth, what side of the boat in relation to the structure (if any that's prodominant including bottom content too like mud, rock, sand, weeds, etc...or changes/transitions in them).

It's a crap shoot on my end here but, if you seek 'em out and keep moving, and are willing to change baits and set-ups you WILL find 'em If you're willing ... and they cooperate :) :p .

Hope this helps at - least in the slightest.
One other tid bit... look at the crappie/perch or others as a bonus and not a hinderance.

Somedays, as you know, seems they've got their mouths welded shut... then change your presentation(s), bait(s). maybe drifting lindy rigs, floating jigs, tipped lead jigs, and the ever so popular slip float are the key to a full cooler. Just never know.

I'm not a local so I'm in the dark as far as the patterns the fish are currently on there.

Just an example: Lake Winnabago here in Wisconsin is one of the best walleye fisheries in the midwest if not country. Things change from season to season and day to day ... but, you can always find 'em if you are willing to move and change tactics ... some guys this time of year still swear by trolling cracks(*edit* ment cranks).. others by spinner rigs and half a crawler... some by anchoring and casting one of the many reefs... others by dead stickin' a slip float then snap jigging on the drift... they all produce. Some better some days than others and they're fighting sheepshead, perch, and whitebass and catfish in the process...

Holy priest!! I've written a book .. pardon that.

Re: Best Bait

Hey barlow thanks for the info. I appreciate you taking the time to type all that out. I have the poles in my boat mostly rigged for different size beetle spins. I usually catch fish but want to get better at the walleye. Right now my boat will go very slow. It has a 37 year old chrysler that overheated yesterday. I have a 30 lb thrust trolling motor that I fished with for almost two hours yesterday which will go slow enough to not read on my gps. IF you can get away you should go to the Iboats reunion in Tennesee. I know at least five of us wlll be there. It is Sept 16 - 19. If you are interested in flying down there for it let me know. I am flying into Nashville and renting a car so you can tag along with me if you need a ride. Oh yeah. I fish South Center lake. It has tons of good structure and lots of big fish in it. I nailed a 25 inch walleye there two weeks ago and forgot my landing net. I tried to pick it up out of the lake by the fishing line and the knot broke. My wife could hear me scream 45 miles away. I learned after that to retie my swivels everytime I go fishing. After catching a couple hundred fish the knots get worn right at the swivel. Next time I go I will try out some of these tactics. Thanks again

Re: Best Bait

hey no prob - wish I was closer than I'd swing in and waste some gas with ya ... hope I didn't complicate things.

No need to go out and totaly re-rig your 'operation'. As long as you've got some rods that can handle pullin' a little bit of hardware with some 1-3lb fish hangin' on the back and an extra spool for your reels to wind up a tad heavier line ... you're good to go. I'd probably start out talking to a few of the Bait shop owners or even hire a local guide for a half a day to speed up the process. Make sure you talk his ear off and ask questions!! More than likely he'll show you spots, specific tactics that relate to that body of water, and spew out the seasonal daily patterns the fish are prone to.... this 'investment' could pay off much better than you think. saving time and money in the long run.
I did a whole day split with four guys (two take the morning and two take the evening)on a lake in Northern WI on the first day of a 7 day trip a few years ago and it payed off quite well. All four of us were seasoned fisherman but, we came to the conclusion that if we wanted to really get the 'dirt' on the water system for the rest of the week we'd be better off goin' that route than splitting up and starting cold turkey. I guess I'm just talkin' here. anywho ... feel free to ask as you did ... I'm not the only one here.

'bout Septembers outing.. I really appreciate the invite!!but, I've got a 'date' with my sweethearts in the Ladysmith area on those dates. The 18th is the opening of Grouse hunting in the North woods and I intend to keep it cause you gotta keep your babies happy

Re: Best Bait

No rerigging required. I keep one at 2 lb, one at 6lb, one at 8lb, one at 10 and then there is the biggun that has 60 lb test.

Re: Best Bait

Best day I ever had on walleye was with a (Are you ready for this?) Bagley Deep Diving Killer Bee II, Firetiger pattern.

During the day I cast it to rock piles and drop-offs. An even dozen eyes up to about 9lb (30"). Kept two 3lb-ers for dinner.

Also caught three smallies in the 3-5lb class on consecutive casts, plus a 34" musky on that same lure that day.

Lake Of The Woods, Northwest area, July 1997.

It would probably catch crappies, too, but they would be real slabs.

To get different results, try different tactics.

Re: Best Bait

I just thought I'd post a pic of that spoon I was talking about. You can see I added a split ring & bead swivel to prevent line twist. I think that is a factory hook size. As far as which size it actually is have no idea. It's been years since I've fished with it. I see they offer a white color now which doesn't make sense to me, I thought the "flash" was the key to this lure. ??
Since I have a few bags of freezer fish, I actually tied one on to my baitcaster & thought I'd give it a few throws tommorow when I'm out. I know we did very well with this lure. We'll see what happens. I'd like to go after some larger fish this year.
Re: Best Bait

Heck if she's going to get ticked off ...midas well throw a pair of yellow bird planner boards on the list too .... green, for right - red, for left. :D :p

OH!!! .. and don't forget the trollers bible: -Precision trolling-

96039011bm2.jpg

*edit* - forgot to add that this book will be a great help in figuring out where your bait is in the water column ..amount of line, diameter of line, boat speed, weight, type of baits and presentations .... I forgot to mention this from the begining ... must have 'tool' in my opinion and a good referance in any case!

one more thing ... stop by and pick up something for the wife and give it to her before you 'haul' your gear inside ...may lessen the sting. :p
