I have an option to buy a 20' Moppie. It needs a new engine (cracked block) and some major TLC. It's a bit of a disaster actually. However, it is structurally sound (I couldn't find any rot) and noone has ever drilled a bunch of holes to mount stuff in it. I'm thinking about buying and just reselling it to make a few bucks. I think I can get it for $2000. Sound like a fair deal?

Re: Bertram boats

I worked for them for a short period in the late 1960s. They were built in Miami, Fl. They did not build them any better. You have a real find and can make a few $$$ as Bertrams are in high demand. I would be tempted to do a high quality restoration and keep it.

Re: Bertram boats

That's what I thought. Bertrams are great boats. If I had the time and space, I wouldn't think twice, I'd just restore it. Unfortunately this isn't the case, I'd have to store it for another year, possibly longer before I could do it. I'm not sure I want to be looking at it sit that long. I'll clean it up and evaluate what needs doing and go from there. It'd be an awesome boat for around here (pacific northwest). It's worth the thought. Thanks... I think :)

Wow! They took my offer! I got it... yay! It's a 1969 unit and the original owners say they still have the bill of sale :)
Not only that, it's in the same spot at the same marina (in a boathouse) since they bought it. Hard to believe really.
Know what's neat? Long ago my Grampa had a 40 Grenfell and my step-dad had a 20 Double Eagle on the same dock as the Bertram is. When I was just a gaffer we walked by the boat all the time. I remember it. When I told my step-dad what boat I bought he remembered it right away... from the 70's! A little history is cool. What to do now? I'll bring it home and figure it out.

Magster, you finally got a boat! If you really put your nose to the grindstone, you can get a motor in there, work out the bugs and hopefully be able to use it this season.

Re: Bertram boats

Hey Strat :)
I still have the use of a 'cherry' little 17' Bayliner (closed bow/Volvo power) I picked up for my folks so they can go out fishing or whatever (they're stuck with a lousy pension). I bought the Bertram to make a few bucks but now I'm thinkin' about keeping it.
I'm still looking for the 'right' larger boat... something like a 25' Sundancer. I had a nice 27' Monterey picked out but it 'failed' it's survey. Too bad, it was a really nice looking unit. I've spent a small fortune travelling around looking at some of these boats that people call 'mint condition'. I might be without a cruiser for a bit because I just can't find one that's nice and priced right. That's not too much to ask is it? There's a 26' Sundancer in the new Boat Journal that looks good... looks like I'm going for another drive this weekend :)
Don't get me wrong, I love boat shopping!

You will always be sorry if you get rid of the Bertram. I had a 31 that I sold in 88 and I still miss it.

Finally!
I got it.
Sorta'... I have to tow it back to the boat ramp (a lengthy tow) tonight but it shouldn't be a problem.

I'll try to get a picture of my Bayliner towing the Bertram :)
The guy kept stalling me... I thought he'd changed his mind actually. Anyways, on Friday he called to tell me his new boat was here and to come and get the 'old boat' by today. Done!
The fella' bought one of these new Aluminum boats with 4 stroke main and kicker. A nice unit for sure.
