Read the Service bulletin link I posted in reply #14. It states they started putting the bearing in with the groove facing forward in 85 and newer. Before that it could have been either way, it didn't matter.

Ok, finally got all the parts I need to R&R the bellows and gimble bearing. One question, short of buying the special bearing installation tool, what do y'all use that I might have lying around the shop to drive in the gimble bearing?

I use the race from the old gimball bearing. Works great.

i used a large drift punch made from a kingpin to "walk" the bearing in.
