Ok, I get that these are a bugger to remove to change the bellows. I had the tool, I reefed on it with a breaker bar, and I stripped the splines on the tool..... new one is on the way... However, before I jack another tool up, or worse strip the spline in the pivot bolt, about how much heat is needed for the loctite? (I guess some have it some dont...) If its loctite red, then IIRC its about 350 degrees to melt it. does this seem plausible? Worse come to worst, how much of a PITA is it to drill the heads to get the bellhousing off, and then extract the remains from the gimbal housing?

Outdrive attempting to being worked on is a 1980 vintage (Pre-alpha.... that ought to get some dander up... LOL) MC-1 120hp setup.

Ayuh,..... A 1/2" allen key is a 6-point version of the splined tool,....
Only stronger,.....

3- 400* should soften the loctite,...

ok, ill get her good and hot with the propane torch after I see if I can procure a 1/2" allen tool here in town. Would prefer to get this off today, rather than have it sit in the yard apart for a week or so waiting on parts/tools.....

just wish there was better access to the gimbal housing where they thread in, to get the heat where its needed rather than going through the head. besides aluminum heats faster than steel.....

You really need to apply the heat to the bellhousing not the Pins. The pin threads into the bellhousing would heat that around the pivot point

Got the buggers...... Autozone had a 1/2 inch allen that is 1/2 inch drive. kept the force much closer to the bolt, and heat did the trick. kept a bit of pressure on the breaker bar, and when the loctite released, they came out easy. Good thing I am doing this job, the bellows were SHOT, same as the lower shift cable.... it was still free and working, but the jacket worn through, and the outer wires were pretty much rusted through. Will have a fresh transom unit now..... time to clean everything out good of all the decade plus old grease and accumulated crud....

Thanks for all your ideas to remove these two little rascals to liberate the gimbal.
A halfway inch Allen key sounds just the job
