1988 Alpha 1 Gen 1 with 3.0. I have been working on the boat on and off over winter and have installed new trim sensors gimbal bearing, u joints, bellows, shift cable, etc and have had splendid luck. Got the water hose and u joint bellows all attached today and the shift cable inserted and went to install pivot bolts and somehow the threads on the port side got damaged and can only install the bolt a short way before it gets tight. Dont know how it happened or if it was that way before. Neither bolt works on the port side and both bolts work on the starboard side just fine so it's not a bolt problem. My question is does one dare to run a tap or thread chaser through this material?. It's not exactly cast iron but on the other hand it's worthless as it is. I'm just stumped as to how the threads got damaged. Anyone have other suggestions? I was going to buy a 5/8-18 bolt and see if that would go through and perhaps clean out the threads too but will probably need a chaser or tap. Any other suggestions? This is not the step where I anticipated trouble.
