Hey, just curious if anyone has used Bedliner as a waterproofing option. Website for the different brands says waterproof and moisture resistant, figured that plus the strength of it being anti chip/anti crack would work good in coating the top of the stringers under deck that I’m not able to get the glass nicely over.

Curious thoughts on this or if there’s a better product to seal wood that isn’t glassed.

Gee, that would be way down my list, behind polyurethane resin, spar varnish, epoxy paint etc.

Why can you not glass it? You can always staple some fiberglass cloth to the underside of the deck, saturate it with resin and lay it over the stringers. Be sure to screw thru the decking into the stringers to fasten it. Use SS fasteners and lay cloth and resin over the deck to waterproof.

Thanks for the reply Chris! The top of the stringers I’m probably just bad at it haha, it is just refusing to making the bend over the 5/8 wide stringer without popping up. The other spot I can’t is the drain groove at the back near the bilge is curved and 5/8 wide aswell which the glass is fighting me on. Using BIAX and tried with 1.5oz CSM with no luck aswell.

What would be the best waterproofing option besides glass in your head?

Chopped Strang Mat is not real flexible, as you are seeing. You could lay the CSM flat across all the stringers and staple it down. Saturate it and lay the decking over it. Of course, you will get a better outcome by stapling the mat to the underside of the decking and laying that over the stringers, as described. Alternatively, 10 oz cloth is much more flexible, and pretty strong.

Thanks for the info! Does cloth work with polyester resin? I have a 6” roll of 6oz cloth that I could use.

Cloth works fine with poly resin. I have been told (never tried it) that CSM binder is dissolved by epoxy resin. That is the only incompatibility I know of.

You do not really need to waterproof the top of the stringers. However, laying cloth over them and screwing down the deck binds everything together real well and water proofs as well.

I thought the problem with CSM and epoxy is that the binder is NOT dissolved by the epoxy, which make CSM less effective in laminating with epoxy.

In any case, normally when using poly resin, fiberglass cloth is alternated with CSM to help the cloth adhere better (that's why 1708 consists of a layer of CSM stitched to cloth). 1708 is generally used with poly resin, while straight 1700 cloth is used with epoxy resin.

Hey Chris just wanted to say thanks. Suited up and went back at it and was able to get the cloth to wrap everything beautifully! Much happier with the result.
