Lost all the pics from yesterday....

Outdrive fully disassembled and plasted, ready for paint

Block on stand. Measured main and rod clearances. 0.002 on mains, just under .002 for the rods (running coated bearings).

Took everything back apart to bore notch the cylinders

No expert as you know, but .002 on clearances I would be worried about with a high volume oil pump

talked to Johny at Yows, and that should be fine. spec is .0020-.0025 motor is capable of high RPM's. the only thing keeping the RPM's below 6300 is the cam and carb peter out.

here are some pics that I took today

Been away for a while life has brought many changes and good one's. Looks like things are evolving nicely here to,I really like what you've done. That engine should brighten your experience just a smidge so to speak. With that being said great work im a tad envious.

Thanks Tail_Gunner.

its been raining every day since I got back from vacation. couple that with grass that was 2' tall and I havent touched anything in the past 2 weeks other than fix the pics

however the admirals car will have to go outside as I want to measure cylinder bore and pistons tonight to verify the fit prior to bore notching and bolting it together.

So, finally getting back to the project

swapped use of some tools with a co-worker. he needed my spring compressor and degree wheel, i needed his bore gauge.

First, dig out the motor
0713171952.jpg

then dig out the measuring tools
0713171952a.jpg

then start at cylinder #1, check the bore at the top, middle, bottom, and in both directions
0713172017.jpg 0713172012.jpg 0713172019a.jpg 0713172010a.jpg 0713172015.jpg 0713172020.jpg 0713172019b.jpg

overall the bores are good, total taper top to bottom is .0008" on one cylinder.

total out of round on one cylinder is .0006"

not bad for a production block.

cylinder bore is 4.310

piston to wall clearance is .005

now to mask off and notch the bores

overall the bores are good, total taper top to bottom is .0008" on one cylinder, most about .0005

total out of round on one cylinder is .0006", most .0003

not bad for a thin-wall production block.

cylinder bore is 4.310

piston to wall clearance is .005

now to mask off and notch the bores

Been a while, need to get back to this.

been doing some interior work (see link in signature) in between working on the motor and other projects.

had to do a timing belt kit for Zack's car as he heads back to college Thursday. had to wait a week for the cam sensor to come in @#$%@#$ brittle plastic

photo274148.jpg
yeah, no room in the dang car

trip to dollar store for modeling clay ....

photo274159.jpg

core plug installed.

photo274155.jpg

bore notching
photo274154.jpg
photo274150.jpg

slathering the cam full of assembly lube and motor oil. like trying to hold onto a snag fish.

photo274161.jpg
photo274160.jpg

crank in and torqued down.

gap filed the rings yesterday (will post pics a bit later)

today, started assembling pistons, installed one of the connecting rods backwards  had to chase a spiral loc down the driveway

a good mechanic can identify automotive chemicals by taste. assembly lube and brake cleaner.....yum..... a bit of blow back from cleaning a rod

went to wash out the taste, realized im out of beer. :grumpy:

done for today

photo274373.jpg
photo274377.jpg

Good call, we all need to know our limitations :D

today's motor building shirt (something dad picked up last time he was at the flea market - Not really my style however fitting for the conversation.)

and yes..... picked up more beer....

A bit of progress....then a step back....then a bit more progress

found a creative piston stop to find dead center

photo277821.jpg
degreed in the cam, required borrowing a set of dial indicator points from the machinists at work

photo277825.jpg
had the heads on the motor just before Irma, just about to fire up the torque wrench and I realized I did not swap the valve springs that match the cam.
photo277828.jpg

so....pull heads apart, start to swap the springs and realize the umbrella seals wont fit with the dual springs I have.

off to the machine shop to get the guides cut for positive seals.

get heads back just before the hurricane, just in time to wrap in plastic and hope the house was still standing

then a trip to Wisconsin so sell my Supercharged Northstar powered Opel GT project and clean out storage

fast forward until this past weekend.

received new damper plate, new SFI flywheel and shims to finish the heads

measure installation height on the springs, shim to exact install height of 1.900" +/- 0.003

Get heads bolted on

get motor painted wrinkle red

get oil pan on

now, for the valve covers and intake.....polished or painted wrinkle black.

Coming along very nice. Guess the wrinkle paint makes it look like a painted rusty motor
