Bayliner with l-drive force alarm

I have purchased a bayliner 1990 model with 88hrs in excellent condition but the problem I have is when it's run at wot for 5mins there is an alarm going off, if I throttle down for a couple off mins it goes off?. There is no tell tail for me to check water flow, is there a way I can check or do I replace the impella and try again? Thanks

Ok firstly ;et us know what hp it is, I would be suspecting the impeller, and this is the first thing you should do anyway when you first buy a new to you motor, not only does it give you sound piece of mind, if you do it yourself you save money to the mechanic for a job which is easy and you learn to get familiar with your motor. Not sure what type of motor it is but check the parts catalogue for a thermostat. Could be your thermo not opening up enough, When I bought a 75hp Chrysler, the bloke had not only put it in backwards, but it was broken on one side from corrosion, only allowing half the flow. Good Luck, do your maintenance first, LU oil filters etc.

Thanks for the reply, it's a 130hp force I believe. I would have thought it would overheat at idle more so than wot. And hard to check for water flow. It's fine on the muffs at home.

IF it does have a thermostat it may not be opening enough, just something to check after you do your maintenance :p
I could't find the parts catalog for a 130hp you sure it is not a 120 or 125 even a 150?

No expert, but I would check the thermostat,impeller, pump housing and possibly how rich/lean it is running.
does water not come out the back with the exhaust, they seem very similar to my 100hp Chrysler.

Is possible to be 120-125 I'm not sure how I can identify. Only just got it so teething it out

No worries, they both have a thermo they also have a spring which my Chrysler didn't have, but suspect the impeller first it may not have been used for a while and the impeller may be perishing, either way both are an easy fix, with the thermo though you probably need to check the parts thingy I posted and get a gasket as well they always tear IMO. Also check Compression first up so you know you have a good head.

they came standard with the 120, 150 was the upsell.

Yeas has water coming out the exhaust,but can only check that at home on the muffs. I thought they would still have a tell tail, I might look at making something as it's always handy to check

If it has 3 cyl it's a 90 if it has 4 then it's a120.
Don't think they made a helldrive in a 150.
Sounds like the impeller needs to be replaced.
The problem with the L-drive is it's in an engine compartment and not any way to install a pee tube or tell tale.
The regular outboard is out there and easy to see.
Fill out the profile, location. You might be close to someone who can help.
Before you go taking the thermo out, you should change the impeller and see if it helps the problem.
The 4 screws holding the thermo cover break / strip easily.
I spent 3 hours trying to undo 2 screws on a head I was repairing.
I ended up using an acetelene torch.
Add another post asking for preventive maint. tips for your motor.
The L-drive is a motor that shouldn't have been produced.
Bad design and only out for a few years. Now hard parts are very hard to find.

they made a 150 for a couple years as a 5 in-line cylinder.

Would be a 120 as it's only a 4cyl, I have read some bad things but it runs extremely smooth and seems great on the water other than the alarm problem. Hopefully get a couple of yrs out off it.

First things to check would be the impeller, thermostat, and hose that connects the water pump to the Power head. Since the lower unit is not bolted directly to the power head like in a standard outboard, there is a hose that feeds water from the water pump in the lower unit to the power head.

I may also look at a pressure gauge for future reference if a pee hose isn't possible.oh I'm in brisbane Australia. Thanks for the help I will find a pump kit and see how it goes

Ok so I've just checked the engine and there are two hoses that go to the exhaust manifold inside the boat, one of these have been disconnected and blocked off.

You've gotta ask yourself and LOL probably someone here, why the hell would you block off a water hose, I will check your parts cat. and see why they would have done that, it's beyond me.

Couldn't find two hoses indicated anywhere in the parts list, but I am definately not saying there isn't two. Hopefully one of the blokes whon know a bit more about Force L-Drives can help, I am more of an old Chrysler lover.

Yeah it's got me stumped! Only 5/8 hose goes to the exhaust manifold?
