I just bought a 99 Ciera 2655 with a 5.0 Merc and an Alpha One outdrive. Motor has low hours. Thing absolutely will not get up over the hump. I've adjusted the timing, put in new plugs, and switched out to a higher-pitch prop, with average speed around 10 knots. What am I missing? Or is the boat just too heavy for my driveline?

I have a large boat myself, but I have 2-305's in it, but I think what you are asking, or saying by (over the hupp) its not planeing out???

If it won't get over the "hump" you need to lower the blade pitch, not increase it as you have stated. If you're running a 17" pitch, you need to reduce it to a 15" or less.

By the way, you are asking quite abit from a 5.0 to push a 26 foot boat, but it should do better than you stated. Are you sure it's firing on all cylinders?

Yes, wont plane out. Firing on all 8 but 2 barrel carb may be gunked up. Prop guy I worked with understood problem so I'm assuming he repitched the prop correctly. Engine bogs down and won't get over 2000 rpm.

Re: Bayliner Ciera 2655

is the bottom of the hull clean?

do you know what the boat weighs? is it cleaned out or loaded up with stuff?

hearing 5.0 and 26' together does sound a little small.

Well, although at best your engine is very small for the boat size, let's assume that the previous owner probably didn't plow along at 2000 rpm all the time. So, there must be an engine problem, as well as maybe needing lower pitch prop AND reducing weight/drag on the boat.

Can you contact the previous owner and find out how it used to run and what prop he had on it? Or, is he hiding from you, knowing he sold you a pig boat that can't plane?

Hull is very clean. Working on a new prop, and possibly 4 barrel carb. Bought the boat from a bank (repo). Prior owner according to title lives near me though. I'll try to hunt him down.

Re: Bayliner Ciera 2655

Years back I had a 27 1/2' Victoria with a 5.7L (4 barrel) & Volvo 270 outdrive. It would not plane when I got it. I had to get a different prop to get it over the hump. Even then it was straining it's guts out with just me on board to stay on top.

Bayliner for years put marginal power in their boats. Mine needed a big block or twins. I sold it 6 weeks before hurricane Andrew gave us a visit.

A 5.0L in a boat that big? Wow! My dad has the same boat with a 460 in it and its needs ever bit muscle to move it. It's pretty good with the 460, pulls tubers and skiers, has a relatively good top end for a boat that big. I doubt the previous owner ever planed off in that boat. You need cubic inches, there is no substitute. Might be able to find a beefed up 5.7L but I'm unsure of what a Alpha drive can handle as far as horsepower. At the lake, I see it all the time, not just Bayliners but other boats as well. Under powered! I guess it was a way to make a larger boat more affordable. Going down in pitch would help as suggested but your poor little motor is going to be screaming! "boat just too heavy for my driveline?" Yes!

I think the general consensus is the pig is just too fat for the HP. New question would be "Can you mate a 5.7L to an Alpha 1 outdrive?" And obviously what sort of $$ am I looking at for a swap?

Re: Bayliner Ciera 2655

I thing it is a bit underpowered BUT i have seen the correct porp on a motor that is in good shape work wonders ;)

I have a underpowered 20' with a 3.0 with a 17" prop and trim tabs it will jump out of the water full loaded with 6 BIG people

The down side is the speed is limited to around 28 MPH with that setup

I think if your motor is found to be healthy ,then with the correct prop and trim tabs you should be able to use it with some limits on top speed

Re: Bayliner Ciera 2655

I hate to chime in but would have to agree on the underpower issue. while growing up my dad had a 27' Bayliner that had twin v-8s in it. It would do okay with power props on it. We used to mostly ski behind it( got four skiers out one time) But if we were going to Rainbow or similar long trip(Lake Powell you can go 100 miles in a heartbeat) WE would always use bigger props to help with the top end speed. But even with twins with big props it took a bit to get over the hump once we did however we could do 35-37mph no prob. If we had a bunch of people on the boat and had them climb up front for a few it helped a lot in geting over quicker. It didn't have trim tabs nor could you run those old Volvos in trim what a pain that was. Good luck with your new boat...

Re: Bayliner Ciera 2655

I have a 1999 2655 and it has the 5.0L in it as well. Duel performance props and has no problems getting up on plane and running! Some models have a 5.7L in them but I have seen NO problems with my 5.0L

If you are not getting above 2000RPM?s then it sounds more like a problem with the engine rather then the boat being underpowered!

VaBoater, you do realize you are bringing up a lot of old posts. This one is 8 months old and montverdefishingdad (the original poster) has not been on the forums since Aug 2007.

Hi O have the same boat it had a 5.0 and I upgrad it to 5.7, you said your RPM doesn't go over 2000 I had the same problem and I did a hall tune up with no result at the end the hall problem was caused by the main Coil however I didn't had any problem starting the boat or had any electrical problems, it's approximately a $100 part so it's worth trying, don't try to get a cheap after market one they won't last for a week. Hopefully that would solve the problem.
