what would be an appropriate battery as a cranking battery for an old mercury 1400? i just can't seem to find an answer i trust. cranking led acid sounds right to me, but i'm failing at figuring out a size online. as always, thanks for the help.

Re: battery choice

Standard marine lead/acid starting battery size 24 will work just fine

Re: battery choice

What does the manual say?

My manual for the 1964 6-cylinder says it needs a battery with at least 650 CCA. I bought a regular 1000 CCA battery (as I hardly run any electronics when parked). Was a bit too tall, so I found a group 24 from interstate, 1000 CCA as well.

Turns this motor in no time, and plenty of reserve.

Ahoy!

Re: battery choice

I've seen V6 racing motors started off lawn mower batteries.

Almost anything that isn't totally junk will work just fine. Wallet and personal preference can go from there.
