How do you remove the water pump base on a 1974 85hp mercury outboard.

Are you talking about changing your impeller/water pump?

Look on you-tube and search impeller replacement. You will get a ton of vids. Some not so good, but others are spot on.

After you have removed the slinger, water pump cover, impeller and wearplate, use two large screwdrivers or flat bars to gently pry the base up and out of the gearcase.

Thanks this is what I thought I had to do but was not sure.

Watch for and keep any shims you might find under the base. You'll need them when you reinstall the base.
