What is the favorite barrier coating on the board? I'm looking for the best $ for $. I need to cover 200sq ft. I'm estimating cost of about $250 with special primer and barrier coat. Any other options?

Re: barrier coat?

Everyone I know uses Interlux Interprotect 2000e. I've been told that the instructions need to be followed to a "T" for maximum adhesion.
I'll probably do my bottom in the spring- if I can afford it.....

Chark, The epoxy barrier coat is a primer. I would not think you need another primer coat. Are you really asking about Antifouling paint?

I think he's got a tinny and some bare spots. Need a primer wash coat to etch it first.

Chark, I used Pettit both times I needed a barrier coat. It was discontinued at Westmarine the second time, so it was pretty cheap. It comes in two 1/2 filled gallon cans, so it is mixed 1::1.

Read the instructions on several brands. Some need you to use more coats which really jacks up the cost and labor involved. The Pettit was the least coats (3) and when I did the coating in the spring, the temperature cure time was such that I could do a single coat each day at 7AM, and then go to work. The fourth day I rolled a coat of antifouling paint, which tended to cure with the epoxy. it has performed flawlessly.

no I'm asking about barrier coat. The reading I've done to this point did mention special primer but it looks like that is not necessary. I'll check the interlux instructions and see what comes of that as well, it may break even on cost that way but save me some time.

I'm hoping to be able to barrier coat the entire hull and antifoul the bottom and topside the sides of the hull.

That's my plan also. I'm doing the sides with Perfection first and then I'll barrier coat and paint the bottom with VC Performance. InterProtect2000e and VC Performance will stick to Perfection but because of the Teflon in VC Performance you would have to break the bond if you did the bottom first. Doing the sides first lets you overlap so you have a continous bond like one big sheet rather than what would equate to a seam.

I checked with Interlux and they agreed that would be the best plan.

As a side note: VC Performance is one of the only bottom paints around that allow you to leave your boat in the water for extended periods and is also not affected by trailering on bunked trailers. It can be used on Aluminum and Fiberglass.

Thanks for sharing, my boat spends time in water and on trailer...good stuff!
