Re: Bad winter cracked my block

what is the hp difference between non vortec 350 and vortec 305.

Ayuh,.... There's about 40hp between the 305,+ the 350...
There's another 25/ 30hp by adding Vortec heads to either of 'em...

Re: Bad winter cracked my block

And to this sad tale I'll add...this winter proves that all inboards and I/Os should be CLOSED COOLED....yes we all know it only takes 10 min to drain an engine/manifolds I've done it myself but if you are away on business or something happens you are SOL even if you live in the deep South and this crazy weather happens...so if I ever put a new engine in my old tub there is no question...closed cooling at least on the block...I'd do full closed cooling but I don't know that the older OMC/Volvo system can be set up that way...GM blocks were designed to be full of 50/50 antifreeze/water...not dirty raw water...or our case...brackish/salt water......

We up North are so used to this that it's typical to winterize the boat or at least drain the system as soon as the season is over in late Oct...but in the South or West you can boat all year...most times...so having closed cooling takes that worry away...the worst that would happen is you'd have to replace the manifolds if you didn't drain it which is still money but an easy job compared to changing an engine...
BTW Boat US insurance notes that they get more claims for freeze damaged engines in warm climates like California than they do up North...because we are just plain conditioned to when the boat comes out...it gets drained....

....thats what I've done...boat come out in Oct...I flush out all the salt and drain it then...as soon as I can I winterize it fully but it gets drained first...

a phone call to somebody or mechanic would have saved some trouble.

Ok guys here are some pics of the damage and amazingly the heads and risers are ok. Total damage around $2,200 should have it back in a week (just in time for summer)
Thanks for all the advise and replies.
