bad noise on the back end.

lost all power to the prop after decelerating. went to throttle back up and the prop was not moving just a loud whine. took the boat to camp and messed with these springloaded fingers on the cable that goes to the outdrive. tried it on the land and the propeller spun so took it back to the dock and the video should be enough to finish the story. also, the lower part seemed to have a lot of water in the gear oil, and may have been low. the upper part (sorry about the terminology) seemed ok, little old but not bad. i saw on here there are clutches. the noise sounds dry, if its a clutch is it an easy fix? anywyas heres the video. how bad is it?

need to know what drive and vintage as Bondo stated.

sounds like gears or splines

if you have a stringer, could be the 2-piece shaft that runs thru the water pump let loose

its a searay, i believe 82. the motor is a v6. i was told its a 3.8 but when i had to replace the starter i had to use a 4.2, the 3.8 was too small.
ill drop the lower end and see if if anything is loose.

if its an 82, its a stringer. post some pics if your not sure.

when was the last time you pulled the lower to replace the water pump impeller and inspect the spline shafts?

just now. bought the boat 2 months ago. splines look good, added some grease. didnt pull the water pump apart. the noise is from the very bottom but i dont hear it much with the engine reved and the gears in neutral. flushing out the gear oil again its still watery.

still whining. i dont hear the noise when the lower end is off completly. itd not the prop though i took that off. it just sounds odd for it to be gears. can the lower end have clutches?

Make sure if it's an OMC first. If it is, and you've been in the lower - I'd be double checkin' the ball gear and then into the upper gear case. Post a photo of your outdrive so we can figure out what 'yer drivin'.

you could have lost the pinion in the lower. I took mine out along with reverse on a stringer 400. also took out the upper, and had to replace both sections of vertical shaft.
