Bad bearing growl from 3.8l stringer

Had bad bearing noise from my 84 omc..pulled the engine and everything looks fine? but whatever it is, is making the engine stall at idle, bad bearing in outdrive??? should i be able to spin the input shaft by hand? doesn't seem loose?

yeah- facing ball gear it should turn clockwise - resistance of water pump impeller will make it drag- it won't "spin", but should turn by hand with some resistance

could be a bearing in the intermediate - start draining compartments and see if any give you silver oil
