Petrol here in NZ is road taxed at the pump and if you use it for farm equipment or a boat ....tough luck .
Diesel is not taxed st the pump but you have to buy km's ( $76 / 1000km's for a private vehicle under 3500kg ) and get a sticker like the rego label that displays the max odometer reading your vehicle can display . They have ways of catching peeps who dodge the tax and when they catch you they make you pay arrears and get a whacking great fine .....not worth it .

Back in the day, I remember Gasoline often was dyed Red, sometimes Purple. Though Purple was supposed to be used in Farm Equipment, as it wasn't taxed. Every Rural town had Inspectors with Tennessee Credit Cards getting samples from cars/trucks parked, Liquor Stores were a popular location. If Purple gas was found, a healthy fine was issued. The Blue dye used in the TCW Oils turned the Red Gas Purplish, and I ended up in court when one of my Portable Tanks was sampled.
Red fuel was leaded gas.

Well, all the unethical Farmers, by illegally burning Purple gas in their cars and trucks for personal use, were not paying their fair share of Taxes
A pick up truck is considered a farm vehicle, heck a car can too if it is titled as farm use here in Minnesota. A farmer can do farm business off the actual land and needs a vehicle to get to an apointment, that is not unethical. Will say a farm licensed side by side has replaced most farm vehicles.

Yeah but driving a farm vehicle into town for a farm appointment is really stretching it ....does he get groceries for instance whilst on "farm business " ? Fair enough if your transporting stuff up a public road to the next paddock . Here we get a bit of grace in that the farm vehicle need not be registered on public roads as long as your not more than a given distance from your property ( cant remember how far 🤔🙄) this includes tractors and harvesters, sprayers whatev .
In my instance I use my quad ( Im not a farmer of any sort ) as a "all terrain disability vehicle 😁" to get down to the river to fish etc and putt round the village socially , and the local cops are ok with that as long as I behave ....but they could hit me with about 500 bucks fine if they wanted to ...each time .

I’m using about $100 worth of oil a year so I’m not that interested in looking for cheaper stuff. I like Lucas and it doesn’t smoke very much.

Yeah ,I figure that a litre of 2stroke oil for saws etc last me a few years so I just buy full synth at double the price of cheaper mineral oil , and I have only just got another 2 stroke outboard ...so same thing . I just feel if it cost me say 10 bucks a year for (what I consider to be ) the best oil then thats cheap motoring 🙂🙂

Shopping for food, liquor, Furniture, Home Electronics, traveling to visit friends/family is NOT Farm Business, but personal Usage of the vehicles, and that should be a Taxable Benefit.

Agreed , I think thats why there is a distance limit , I actually checked up on it and an unregistered farm vehicle cannot use public roads at all ( thats me ) but a registered but not wof'd ( Warrant of fitness is an annual safety test all registered vehicles under 3500kg must pass ) vehicle with a b exemption ( no wof needed ) can do a round trip of not more than 21km between farm block managed by the same person unless its specifically booked in for repair or inspection .
