Bad 2 cycle oil from amazon

I wanted to buy some full synthetic 2 cycle oil (TCW-3) for my speedboat. The boat has a a135HPV6 on it, and I thought maybe the full syn stuff was smoke less. I bought a gallon of it from amazon in Feb. When I opened it in June, it was oil colored (yellow), not blue or green as I had anticipated. The OEM said it might be defective. I recycled it, rather than risk the motor. I complained to amazon to no advail So $55 down the drain.

What brand?

A number of full synthetic DFI oils are amber colored on purpose

Mercury/Quicksilver DFI oils, and some of Amsoil 2 stroke oils, are yellow/amber
Myself I wouldn't use a DFI Oil in an Outboard that premixes the Oil with the Gas, as DFI Oils are not formulated to mix easily with gas.

So because it wasnt the colour you anticipated ( oh the horror ) and because the guy you didnt buy it off said it may be defective ( 'course he bloody did ) ( did you then buy some off him ?) you binned it and complained to Amazon …...........ah ,yeah , Im not surprised you didnt get any "advail ".

Gee, it was not DFI oil. It was full synthetic Sierra TCW-III, and it was supposed to be blue. As it had no dye, I was concerned that something else might be wrong with it as well.

I thought that the OEM of the oil responded to my questions was a positive. They do not sell retail.

Yeah maybe it was , tbh I bought a 1L bottle of Castrol 2T for the chainsaw and it was blue where as the last lot of Penrite was green ....but what really burnt my steak was that I didnt notice until I got home that the castrol bottle didnt have one of those separate chambers to measure out the oil dose ......and I had already biffed the empty Penrite one Doesnt sound like much bit its a pita having to find a measuring container and cart it round ......I spose its back to guessing how much is 20ml ...and adding a bit

Thank You for clarifying the Brand of the Oil. An inquiry to Sierra about the Oil, may have saved you some frustration.
As a preteen(late 60s), I remember my Uncle using an Esso(Exxon in US) Outboard Motor Oil that was amber

Did you use an Amazon card to purchase it ? If so call the card company. I always use my Amazon card for things like that because if I have to call and complain 100% no worries we will credit you and 50% just keep the order.
Now if not and you have a membership, call them, same result.
The worst thing you can do is sound " pissed off " with those people, they record EVERYTHING and have an algorythem ( scuse spelin ') to record reaction. If they feel you are more than upset ( little tipsy, just had argue with wife, etc. ) they will shut you down. Be nice " I love amazon, I do not know how this happened" do it right, everything is free. Re read that !
Also, if you are trying to change oil for your boat smoking ( I have many answers, rather Forum took this one )

Jimmbo, 2 cycle oil in the 60's was often just non-detergent SAE-30 auto oil. Some were adding dye to it back then, but not everyone. We often ran cheap ND SAE-30 in my Fat-Fifty and Big Twin.

I thought Sierra was very kind to me by providing prompt answers to my questions. They counseled me not to use the oil as it may have other missing ingredients. I would have liked it if they suggested how it might have happened, as they likely would not have sold defective oil, and the oil was sealed.

Amazon did not want to allow a return because the return date had passed. I did not think I needed to inspect the contents of a sealed jug of motor oil.

I thought I would try a gallon of the full Syn stuff and see if it made any difference. The price was more than double of the syn blend TCW-III.

Ran a gallon the Sierra synthetic when it first came out. It smoked more than normal and had a weird smell.

Me too… but that wasn’t the case.

Some claimed (THT) it was burning off carbon deposits and it would get better as time went on.

The smell was weird. A chemical smell. Guessing that is why fuel and 2 stroke oil fragrances are gaining in popularity

The Pennzoil TCW-3 syn blend is well thought of over in outboard land (The Hull Truth)

I ended up Pennzoil Premium Plus after a lot of experimenting.
I order case lots at $18 a gallon. It’s $21 a gallon at local auto parts store

I generally use one of the syn blend Pennzoil TCW-III products. It works fine. I just wanted to try a full syn oil, for curiosity.

Thanks for the clarification, when you said "OEM" in your original Post, I thought you were referring to BRP or Mercury.

BTW- if you do mix non-dyed ND SAE-30 oil into your gasoline, like we did in the 60's and 70's, you can see it, but it is not obvious. In those days I was using a 24::1 mix in my Fatty, and that quart of oil gave the gasoline a greasy yellow color.

Back in the day, I remember Gasoline often was dyed Red, sometimes Purple. Though Purple was supposed to be used in Farm Equipment, as it wasn't taxed. Every Rural town had Inspectors with Tennessee Credit Cards getting samples from cars/trucks parked, Liquor Stores were a popular location. If Purple gas was found, a healthy fine was issued. The Blue dye used in the TCW Oils turned the Red Gas Purplish, and I ended up in court when one of my Portable Tanks was sampled.

Yikes, I never heard of the enforcement actions like that. We have diesel here in NJ that is dyed or not to show it payed road tax. Marine diesel is not taxed the same way.

Well, all the unethical Farmers, by illegally burning Purple gas in their cars and trucks for personal use, were not paying their fair share of Taxes
