axle repair sleeve question

I've got a trailer axle that has slight damage , mainly some grooves, on the grease seal face. 11/16 " axle. ordered a repair sleeve that fits perfectly and doesn't wiggle, but doesn't press fit on like it should...
I thought maybe using jb weld as a glue to stick the sleeve on.....
should/would that work?

If you have the correct speedi sleeve, you have to heat it to put it on, then it shrinks in place

ok...I've ordered a micrometer, I plan to measure it and see if I can get one.
Didnt see anything about heating one up, they just use a press fit with an installation tool....

I've thought about loctite also...better than jbweld for this purpose?
Loctite is a bear to remove.

They used to recommend a non-hardening sealer under them to prevent moisture from getting under them. I've used # 2 permatex with good results in the past

absolutely thats what it is made for- the green loctitie is a retaining compound made for sleeves and bearings on shafts etc where there is some wear.

You can also use a center punch and stake the axle before sliding the sleeve on. This will raise a the area around where you punch to provide a slight interference fit. Common repair method when there is some wear

I would use Permatex Ultra Black. Will seal water out, hold the sleeve in place, and will enable sleeve removal if needed.

thanks.....
I got this. If it can hold cylinder liners, It'll hold this repair sleeve...But Im sure all the ideas would work.

you should not need to use any form of glue or what not on a 'speedy sleeve' if you have the correct one.
also as posted ' never use heat ' to make the sleeve go on.
if done correctly , the sleeve should slide strait in place , you can use a small smear of grease to start the process , be sure to push the sleeve dead strait from the beginning.
the sleeve will have some resistance , once it has gone about 2mm on it should push the rest of the way smoothly with even resistance..

i like to use a fine emery cloth to polish the surface and drop the crank into the freezer for 10 min when doing crankshafts with speedy sleeve , it seems to help the process.

In regards to axle seals, always check that the inner diameter of the seal fits snugly on the seal run surface. Sometimes the inner diameter may be wrong and too large from wrong packaging.

It's a done deal. The sleeve did not fit as an interference fit as it should have but it also wasn't really loose..but it would spin.
So I just finished with the green loctite. Will check it tomorrow. If it's tight, great. I'll check it at season end. Just have one big trailer trip, about 2.5 hrs, so I'm not worried.
My micrometer comes today, if the sleeve didn't stick, I'll mic it and try to order the exact one....
worst case scenario is I call up Karavan trailers and have them make me a new complete axle like they did 2 years ago.....$90...

the loctite worked....
If u ever need to get it off you need some heat

They make a silver version 660 that I have used for work assemblies on industrial mixers that is fantastic takes up big gaps

yep...I can do that....should be fine.....
but if it causes problems...Karavan said they'd make me a new one (called today) for $188 like they did two years ago ('cept it was $90 back then).
They still have the specs and blueprints for my year trailer still....
....good people....

It should be a tight fit. I used the permatex aviation seal stuff Just fill any grooves and stop water from getting in underneath it. These are not a permanent fix, green loctite will make replacing it a bear in the future.
BTW when its time to replace it, hammer the sleeve all the way around to thin the metal and it should slide off. No special tools needed unless you used green loctite.

Have removed the green loctite many times for work...a toolmaker for 50 years. It releases under heat, even says so on the container...
