Thanks to some very good information I found here I was able to detect a serious problem with a 35 merc and I passed on buying it for 300 bucks. He sold it within several hours though. Makes me wonder it they bought the "pig in a poke" or not. The seller wasnt straight forward about what was wrong with it. I quickly showed him the parts HE BROKE while trying to use his non skills fixin it.gezzzzzzzz THANKS iboats:D

Re: Avoided a mistake

so what was the serious problem, so we can all avoid the mistake.........
The add said the engine ran. When I got there I quickly noticed a couple of missing bolts in the engine shift linkage telling me someone had been doing something other than just cleaning the choke and carb like the guy said he had done, further checking showed I COULD NOT PUT THE ENGINE IN ANY GEAR OTHER THAN DRIVE, It was stuck in drive. The guy had broken the shifter trying to forse it out of gear is my guess and then started taking the shift linkage apart not knowing what he was doing . I was afraid at this point to buy it...only 300 bucks and maybe worth that in parts but I want a working engine.

Okay......

Most of us have run into and created the same problem when doing our impellar...... common error but breaking the linkage just means the guy was a bull on the outboard!

Good choice.
