I am in the midst of restoring my 1994 bowrider.
I removed the cap which was secured to the hull with wood screws which go from the cap into 3/4" strips of plywood. See highlight in picture below.

The plywood strips are in good shape, but I plan on replacing them w/ solid wood, I'll cut up some 2x4s.

How do y'all recommend treating them?
I could:
1: Do nothing as the old strips lasted just fine.
2: Poly and wrap them in CSM, too much work.
3: Coat w/epoxy, overkill, might be too stiff?.
4: Use the old-timers treatment, that I picked up on this forum, from woodonglass?
  • 1 part Boiled Linseed Oil.
  • 2 parts Mineral Spirits.
  • 1 part Spar Varnish.
5: something else?

Any of those methods would work fine, except maybe just leaving them uncoated, or you could skip the wood and just rivet them together with some 3m sealant.

#1. Do nothing and use the old plywood strips.

do not replace superior strength plywood with cut up 2x4's unless the 2x4's are white oak and you steam them to shape. Pine is not sufficient.

if you really are worried, grab a bucket of gel and a brush and mop some on. however not needed.
