This past Saturday I was on the Long Wharf in Sag Harbor NY. A very busy harbor and loaded with big buck boats, especially the week of the 4th of July.

This guy pulls up to the wharf in his 36ft Sea Ray and ties up. This area is usually reserved for the big yachs - 100ft and up. The Harbor Master pulls up (he looks like the cop from the old movie "They call me Mr. Tibbs!) and I notice his is carrying a rather large side arm prominently displayed. His young assistant gets out on the wharf and asks the boat owner for his papers, then gives them to the Harbor Master. The Sea Ray owner gets a BIG fine (not sure how much, but he is not pleased). So the SR owner says to the assistant, "can I at least go get some lunch before I go?" (to me this is pushing your luck). She says you have to ask the HM. Just then, HM gets out of his boat to see what is going on and the assistant tells him. HM, says "get your lunch then make way.." and leaves. The assistant says to him "Why did you let him stay?" HM says " For the price of that ticket, a little compassion will go a long way...".

I was surprised! If I got that ticket, I would have taken off pronto!

It was kind of cool to see the tough looking guy with the big gun show compasion to someone he just ticketed in a big way. I bet next time that Sea Ray owner pulls into the harbor, he will radio the HM and ask where to dock. You can count on it.
