We don't do 1200 miles at a crack, but the perfect weekend for my wife and I is to get in the car, decide whether to turn right or left out of the driveway, and wander off for the weekend. The hope is to find some new roads and small towns that we have not seen before. Price of gas hurts, but doesn't stop us.

I love a good road trip ... but would always factor cost of trip and personal time to see if it was really worth it ... really like to keep my $ as local as possible.

That said, my wife hates long trips in the car, so when planning vacations it either has to be within a 6 - 8 hour drive, or longer than that so we can justify flying.

This fall I am heading to Colorado for another hunting trip ... wife isn't going, so we can drive!

I love back roads and even local short trips I will take different routes each time ... it is a good trip when I have been on roads I have never been on before.

1200 miles is my longest round trip. I did it to take one kid to her grandparents, then drove right back, it was like 14 hours with stops and such. I would like it better if I had someone to share the driving.

Re: Are you the "road trip" type?

A few years ago I drove a 16 hour round trip to buy a motorcycle. For the price I paid, and the fact the guy said he would knock of another 500 if I came the next day, it was worth it to me.

I grew up traveling with my parents, MS to CA about every other year, I graduated high school and moved to NOLA. Drove the 5 hour trip more times that I can count while in college. The moved to SLC (clearfield to be exact) and drove back home to MS twice. 36 hours strait one way.

Now that the wife and I are under the same understanding, we take road trips frequently. Allot of back road riding on the bike and highway miles in her little Neon.

I am usually always game for a road trip.

I love a road trip. As I've posted before, Scouts are quite rare in my area of the world. Once it was the boat for me, however, I began scouring North America for a good, low hour deal. I narrowed it down to three - one only an hour's drive from me (turned out to be quite beat up...figures...), another near Boston (had an older 2-stroke Yammy on it), and finally, the one we bought. This one was located down near the NC / SC border, though so it required a one-way plane ticket, a U-haul rental, and one very long drive home. Plenty worth it though in my opinion. Even with cost of the flight, rental, and gas to tow it 1400 km home, it was a good deal in my mind.

Humm.. 1,200 miles is a short week for me. :D

Drove RT Baltimore to Boston last week. Leaving in an hour or so to drive from Baltimore to Kingston Ontario, 2 hour meeting Thursday morning, then drive back to Baltimore. Next week will be a short one. RT Baltimore to Roanoke.
