I made a recent post about a 1200 mile (round trip) road trip to pick up some wanted goodies and I got some PM's asking why in the world I would drive that far. To me, that wasn't a big deal as road trips go and I actualy enjoy seeing new parts of the country.

So how about others? Would you make a road trip if you spotted a good deal?

Re: Are you the "road trip" type?

I have driven many miles and many hours to get a good deal. my personal "best" though according to those who knew me at the time was drivign from NC to southern Florida just to have dinner with my dad. I was feeling itchy, and had a day or two, drove down, ate dinner, slept a few hours and drove back.
drove to Dallas from Wis to watch a football game. got there 3 hours before kickoff, watched the game, had dinner, crashed for a few hours and then drove home.

I hate flying but i'll drive anywhere when the mood hits me.

Gas prices have mostly killed the possibility of a road trip especially with a vehicle capable of towing.

Road trips to buys stuff, not so much these days (3/4 ton Burb).

Used to do road trips all the time to find big mountains and big water!

I'll need to wait a few more years for my boys to get a little bigger. Then, load up!

We recently got a Ford Flex, specifically so that we can take longer trips and still be comfortable. The fact that it gets 29mpg hwy and so roomy that my two boys can't kick the back of the seat mean longer trips for us:)

I do think that 1200mi is quite a trip, I have been looking at a boat less than half that distance away, wondering it it's worth the drive to get it.

Used to really enjoy long road trips.

Here to LOTW and back towing a Whaler; 3,000 miles round trip.

Here to Murrietta, CA to pick up grandbuddy, there to SLC to visit iboats, then Yellowstone, Little Bighorn Battlefield, Devil's Tower, Black Hills, Crazy Horse Memorial and Mount Rushmore. Then back to The Hideout; about 5,000 miles. The ML was better than a limo. What a glorious country we live in!!

My health and the price of petrol have pretty much shut me down on trips over a few hundred miles, but I still really enjoy cruising country back roads in Texas. Have a Subaru Forester now. Not as luxurious as the ML, but bulletproof and pleasant to drive.

Long road trips are a part of this guys job description, it is nothing to drive 10-14 hours one way to do up a quote, UGH !!

But I do enjoy doing long pulls on the back roads on the old xt600 thumper. :)

Road trips are a lot of our vacations. Last summer we loaded up the trailer and drove up to BC, that was about a 1200 mile trip stopping in Whistler, Cache Creek, Kelowna & Winthrop.

In 2008 we did a 2500 mile trip to Yellowstone and Tetons, and planning on doing another Yellowstone trip this summer.

We love road trips, and try to avoid interstates so we can see America as it is and was before everything went to the dogs!...That's old geezer talk, but sometimes it seems things for sure was a lot better. I was 10 years old before TV, and life was awful sweet then, all I did was hunt rabbits, squirrels, any thing else that moved....

A road trip to by stuff no unless it was a scarcity issue. A flight to NY to see a Broadway show or a cocktail party with friends and return the next day many times.

Here in AR, every drive down the road is a real trip. There are spectacular views and lots of places to visit. There are so many curvy back roads, and they will give you motion sickness. A cruise control has no purpose in many places here. People here judge a drive by the time it takes rather than using miles. Heck 35 miles may take 50 minutes.
With the cost of gas on the rise, I was planning on getting a good road bike so road trips would be affordable and more enjoyable. This should save enough for the gas in the boat.:)

Heck I would drive somewhere just to look at the rocks:eek:

Class I'm taking this summer will have about 4 overnight field exercises(class field trips)

The class was originally to go to Hawaii for a week but in this economy there weren't enough students willing to spend the 2k for 8 days on the big island:mad: and that was everything included, air fare, transportation, meals, hotel etc. the only ting you needed money was for drinks and trinkets.

We used to drive over 2,000 miles to hunt and didn't always take game. Now we go 2,000 miles and pickup a few rocks :D

Re: Are you the "road trip" type?

I drove 24+ hours round trip to pick up my boat. Left at midnight and didn't get home till the next morning at 6am, couple hours of sleep here and there.

It was only 1100 miles, but we had to cross the Sierra's and I didn't go over 55MPH towing back home, questionable tires. Then, the truck sprung a pin hole radiator leak in the middle-of-no-where Nevada. Luckily, there was cell reception and my wife only had to drive 1/2 hour to save my butt.

I've driven, 4-6 hours, fished dawn to dusk, then drove back home. I'm glad the gas prices have squashed those trips as I'm gettin' too old for that sh.... :D

Re: Are you the "road trip" type?

Wife and I cruise backroads on our 1500 Goldwing every chance we get.Weekends we leave fairly early in the morning and roll back home at 9-10 at night.I usually don't decide which way I'm turning until I hit the next stop sign.Doesn't matter where you go as long as you are going. We also go for a couple of weeks in July for our holidays.Usually 3-4k miles.Been doing this for over 20 years.

P.S. My user name here is the one I use on the Steve Saunders Golwing Forum.Soon to be changed for a more appropriate boat forum name.

Our family loves road trip vacations. It's all about making the ride as much fun as the destination. The big old Suburban has been a good friend. :)

Re: Are you the "road trip" type?

I drove 21 hours straight to pickup my boat and 24 hours back. It was with an older suv that I was selling anyway right after the trip so mileage was not an issue.

I was working a lot of ot and needed a break from work and the drive was a way to escape the day to day grind.

Well in the 26 years I was in the service, I "visited" 63 different countries and each one of them I flew in then out, often times in a really big hurry!, so now a days I drive, to every destination I wish to visit and I drive, drive, drive...then I drive some more..
