It appeared to be a " like new " boat with a claimed 43 hrs run time.-----It is a $15,000 boat now.-----Replacement engines ( new ) add up very quickly.-----I would verify that a factory new ( long block , low hrs ) engine was properly installed or cancel the deal.-----What is the general location of where this boat is ??----Texas ??

So 'purchase made' meaning money paid? It may be your boat, but consumer protection laws would come into play at that point. 'fitness for use' type of stuff.

When did it become your father's boat and should it have been winterized prior to . . .? Money paid usually is when ownership transfers (or shortly thereafter)

Keep in mind that the dealer is not likely to make any money on the boat, if they have to fix it at their expense. So they will try to keep their cost down.

Sounds like a messey situation, but I'm not sure we know all the details at this point.

Money paid last week. They kept the boat to “prep” it. LOL! We were due to have the delivery “walk around” next week.

The answer to your original question (Are We in Trouble?) may be yes. However, it really depends on the details of the transaction and ownership transfer.

If you are in a situation of being stuck with owning a broken boat (engine), you are really relying on the dealer acting in good faith. If I were me in this situation, I'd see if the dealer is going to fix the boat (ie replace the engine) at their expense and amend any contractual agreements to give you right of refusal after repairs are done. Not sure they will go for that, but it seems like you have a fair amount of risk at this point.

Help us out here . . .

You agreed to buy the boat (when)?
Were there any contingencies for inspections in-water testing?
You paid the $$$ last week.

What does the sales contract state regarding inspections and transfer of ownership?

What commitments have been made by the dealer? Are they in writing?

If you're getting a warranty on the rebuilt engine I don't see an issue pressing forward. But I think I'd at a minimum start inquiring about other marinas in your area to see who has a good reputation for being honest and take your boat there in the future for repairs.

My father has the contract. I will get my hands on it today and respond with solid information to this inquiry. All good questions and I think we will ask for more time to decide what to do. A.k.a. time for me to come back here and ask you guys.

BTW as far as I know there are no more “new” base 4.3s, all you can find now are reman engines.

How many hours will be on the rebuilt engine? Will they warranty it? Even if 0, I think they owe you some money back.

Agreed. We just left the dealership and they wouldn’t even come down a penny on the deal. Stating that the replacement engine was costing them so much. (Not our problem) I was surprised that they wouldn’t come down a thousand or two or even offer extended service warranty.

Good ending to the story. Sorry y'all have to find another boat, but it's better than havin' one that's nuthin' but trouble.

Even if they put a new long block, there's still exhaust manifolds and stuff that could be damaged. Then there is the plumbing on the boat that's probably damaged. Good to walk away.....
