Hello everybody I’m new to the forum and I know this isn’t the place to say hello but as this is my first post I wanted to say hello nonetheless.

OK here’s the problem. My father just bought a low our CROWNLINE 18 SS. The dealer called him Jess tonight to inform him that they did not winterize the boat it set outside and has a cracked block. They’re trying to replace the engine which is a 4.3 L V6 with a rebuilt. This one has higher hours. My first instinct was to tell him to cancel the sale and run for his life. Do you agree? Second question is does anyone know how much this would devalue the boat? We’re going to meet them tomorrow any response from someone who knows more about boats than I do would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time.

This would be our 1st boat so I’m deferring to you all here. It is a beautiful boat. Like new other than the dealerships horrible mistake. 43 hours on this unit. Terrible waste. Or not…let me know what ya think. 😊

Thank you again for any response. I know nothing about this topic and I’m in a crunch. I plan to consult the new buyers checklist before moving forward as well.

If the engine is a fresh rebuild, then it is better at zero hours.. If it's rebuilt but used, then it's used. It may just have records proving how used or un used it was.. the dealer should discount it accordingly if it is more used than the original which was freeze cracked

Agree. I would not make a snap decision without more information on the replacement engine. Warranty on workmanship and new motor? Don't rush into the sale, ask for a few days to think it through. Dealer is going to have time and money doing the replacement which may make him reticent to lower the price.

Good advice. Thank you. 👍

You should get your $$$ back and start over with a different dealer/boat. Replacing an engine is real hit-or-miss and lots of variables to consider. None of that will be in your control and you will be victimized the whole way.

Run away and find something else.

Post #1 says he just bought it.-----Perhaps has not taken delivery.-----A good dealer would negate the sales contract.----But you never know.-----Dealer may have / should have checked this out before marketing this boat.

I'd also inquire on who rebuilt the motor? A quality shop/rebuild place you should be good to go. If they did it at their shop, are the any good?

I’m not sure I’d want to be doing business with a dealer that’s not competent enough to do a simple winterization. What else wasn’t done? Rebuilds are hit & miss. Who does it what guarantee etc? I’d pass. BTW get a boat with an outboard and avoid all that winterization hassle!

If the area that you live in requires winterization then I would say that the dealer is not the most responsible place to due business. If it was traded in that way and they didn't catch it the same thing applies. If it was a freak cold snap and there going to fix it then that's different. If it's the first to I would get any money spent back and find a better dealer

The business has been an operation for nearly 65 years. The salesman told my father on the phone this is the third time this is happened over their history. I still find it fairly repugnant that it was allowed to happen. We are experiencing very cold weather through the winter so they should have been prepared. -15° windchill today. 😐

It appeared to be a " like new " boat with a claimed 43 hrs run time.-----It is a $15,000 boat now.-----Replacement engines ( new ) add up very quickly.-----I would verify that a factory new ( long block , low hrs ) engine was properly installed or cancel the deal.-----What is the general location of where this boat is ??----Texas ??

That’s correct. The purchase has been made but we have not taken possession of the boat. The dealer still has the boat that we have the contract. Our state law protects us against bullshit like this and concern with vehicles, the lemon law, I don’t know if boats fall into that category. However I do know consumers have certain rights given the fact this was a new purchase a recent purchase I should say

Ok then the other comments have you covered

Normally a boat doesn't get many hours, so even a higher hour one will last as long as it will be used. The issue is if the motor was in good shape to begin with
