We'd like to issue a heartfelt apology to our
American friends and neighbours for the outrageous
remarks of a representative of the governing
party in Canada.
Please understand, when a liberal MP say's she
hates Americans and calls them *******s or when a
press secretary to the Prime Minister call's the
U.S. president a moron it does not reflect the
views of a vast majority of Canadians.
In fact, her words are as insulting to Canadians
as they are to Americans. :(

Re: Apology

This isn't going to start a new controversy, is it?
Heard about it on the radio. Thought, "SO, no big deal". Folks is folks and like other body parts, everybody has an OPINION as well.

I can't imagine that this could possible turn into an "incident". America and Canada? Nearly as tight as Soap & Water.
All of that said, maybe we ought tone down the rhetoric a bit.
(But,..seeing it in print, I really did LOL)

No need to apologize, NoSleep.

America thrives on unjust criticism. It just wants to make us help the rest of the world, just that much more.

"No good deed, goes unpunished", should be our national motto.

We will always be buds with our Canuck friends (whether your goverment likes it or not ;~).

Re: Apology

It's difficult when your own personal views go one way, yet the views of your ruling politicians go the other way.

We have to remember this - I'm sure there are plenty of good people in France and throughout Europe who hate the way their leaders are currently behaving. There are good people in Iraq too, you can bet on that.

Me - I have my own worries about what the current (left wing) NZ government might say or do about the current world conflict... :( I'm hoping it will be OK...

Re: Apology

I have to agree with NOSLEEP. This is the 2nd time in recent history that one of our officials has run off at the mouth and should be fired for stupidty.

We have disagreements with the Americans. We do not think the same 100% of the time. But it is uncalled for for an elected official to make a comment such as this whether it is on or off mike.

I'm appalled at it and hope the official is releived of their post for such stupidity.

So I add my apology to NOSLEEP's.

Re: Apology

Nationalism is a double-edged sword, Nosleep.
We Americans as a people aren't as arogant as the world's precieption of us is. I say this to make the point, that you appology is not needed, outside of distancing yourself from the comments or actions that has turned heads in America.
The leaders of France speak for thier people, but the human being knows better. Sure, there are many french countrymen who feel the way thier government says they should, and it may even be,and usually is, a majority,as they were elected to represent the populus.

But When we make the statement, "man, the french are lame!", it doesn't mean the people..it refers to thier government's actions and leadership's words.

We have many Americans here who are protesting that war that isn't war yet....We tolerate them,as it is thier right. We just drive by and shoot 'em the bird, or something. You'll see us arguing with them on these forums quite often.
but try not to take it personally. I'm sure that when the button is pushed, and the troops are moving, Canada, France, Germany will be at our side,as nations. just as in WW-II..There are in fact, many simularities between then and now, with Nevil Chamberlain of Great Brittain, who signed the peace treaty with Germany, delaring "peace in our time", shortly before the Nazis declared war on them! Today, it's Hanns Blix from Sweeden (I think),and the leader of canada who has the twisted view of world peace, without victories.Thank God for leaders such as Winston Churchill!

I can only wish Chiroc was right. But There is a person or two in France who are feeling the same way as you right now.
Let your representatives know how you feel.Organise groups, sign petitions, and let the world know how you feel, just as oyu have here.
And, Nosleep, God bless you, my friend..And thank you for your support

Re: Apology

Even in Iraq, I expect to see the peaceffull people of Iraq come out of the mire like flowers after a good drenching rain.
Just because thier leader is a psychopath, we can deduce that the liberated ppolutation will blossom in the absence of the insane Husiens.
The only difference right now is, they can't logon here....yet!
I look forward to debating them in the future, or at least, helpin them get that old Force in the chicken pen running again.

Re: Apology

Our canadian government is a joke, I'd consider anything that comes from any of our polititions yaps nothing but mindless trash. When it comes time to vote, we here in BC don't vote a better party in, we just vote the old ones out because they all 'stink'.

Re: Apology

Thanks for saying it, NOSLEEP. Our politicians don't always represent our views, either. I personally feel as much at home in Canada as I do in the US. We are all much alike in our views and national spirit.

Cotterman,

Trust us, Canada does not have monopoly on politicians that say or do idiotic things.

Does anybody remember Bill Clinton, or Trent Lott?

Americans simply refuse to be embarrased by their politician's inane words and actions.

Re: Apology

I guess everyone feels let down by their politicians at some point, and this is starting to happen here in NZ, big time right now.

In NZ there seems to be a wide spectrum of views about Iraq and unfortunately the Labour party, which at present is running the government, is taking a particularly weasel minded view of world politics. We also hear that our prime minister (Helen Clark) is currently refusing to debate the issue in parliament.

The following news article shows the NZ political parties and what their position is on Iraq. You can see it's very divided. Thankfully, my party (Act) has not let me down - but unfortunately they don't have the numbers to change government policy right now.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?storyID=3198685&thesection=news&thesubsection=general

Re: Apology

Nosleep,
There is a bigger "collective" of us that appreciate freedom, and recognize the prices that have been paid in the past to secure it and what's at stake . You're a brother man. It ain't about black and white, it aint about USA and Canada. This is one continent. We're all in this together.

Re: Apology

miloman. I hope you're right but why should the next gov't be any different. They'll still have the power of an overwhleming majority, there will still be zero checks and balances in there and they will still do what they ruddy well want with no reason to fear.

Okay who wants the Tide box now........

Re: Apology

I will not defend Canada's politicians, or what they say. I think simple name calling is pathetic, but if you ever watch the Canadian parliament at work, it is hardly surprising.

However, actions do have reactions, and America has indeed slighted its northern neighbor under this administration. It started when a Canadian reporter asked new President Bush if he knew where PEI was, and his opinion on the potato trade conflicts. Bush did not know even what PEI was (It is a province)
Then tradition has it that our biggest trading partnerand strongest neighbor and ally, Canada, gets the first presidential visit, yet our new president visits Mexico first.
And then our new president allows imposition of repressive trade regulations on Canada in the form of a softwood lumber tariff and farm products, yet coveting Canada's natural gas and oil reserves, and a Canadian would get the idea that this new administration has not the highest regard for our northern neighbors, whether that opinion is justified or not.
To top that off is the friendly fire incident in Afghanistan that killed Canadian troops, and a certain amount of frustration is not surprising from Canadian political voices.
What goes around does indeed come around.
