Anyway to make outdrive work?

I think I already know the answer. I've been searching and searching for a replacement volvo 290. Is there anyway to make a 4 cyl drive work on an 8 cyl?

You would need to change the lower in order to change the gear ratio.
The 290 has a 280 lower and could be fitted to a 280 or 290 of similar vintage. It would need to be reshimmed however. Or purchase a lower with the correct gear ratio for the new 4 cylinder drive.

290's seem rare. Very expensive. What wrong with yours?

my lower unit's case is pretty screwed Been repaired with jb weld, corrosion, etc. etc. etc.

are all 4 cyl 1.98:1?

4 cylinder 2.15:1
8 cylinder 1.61:1

1.89:1 is a six cylinder.

These are volvo ratios
