I have been involved with boats all my life. I currently live on my boat. The one in my avatar. I would say I am right on the cusp sizewise. I live on there by myself and there is plenty of room. Carver did an amazing job laying out the interior of this boat. Oops is right in that you do things in smaller ways and amounts. The great thing is my current marina is only about 1 minute from my office...sweet! Winter will be a little more challenging since I will be in Baltimore. I will have access to water and the marina has its own portable pumpout. I have wintered there before and that's the two big things that you need. The rest is adaptable adventure. I love it.

I wasn't expecting that engine room when I first boarded her, oops. Another version of that boat had half that space. The Viking Sportfish was another story. I waxed that engine room, ate lunch in her, and sometimes took a power nap on the freshwater tank.

I get 6-7 months a year on my Stardust Crusier 40 (not bad for Vermont). At this point, I have propane on demand hot water, propane stove and propane lamps, but other amenities are scarce. If I can't power it off a cheap deep cycle and 35W of solar, than I don't have it. Generally only use lights, water pump, and stereo. No TV.
Very slowly renovating/repairing things. This winters project will be to build a new steel bow, then in the spring, cut the old one off, and install the new one before it gets too late in the spring.

I hate sitting on shore watching people with trailered boats in and out of the lake at will.

Once I get her in presentable shape, I plan on selling it, and using the money on a down payment on something closer to 100ft

We did a study some time ago and discovered that when I retire I'm going back to living on a boat. Gotta have a boat anyway, might as well live on her. I can sell the home and purchase a liveaboard for between $50 and $100 thousand. Less than half of what the home is worth. Slip will cost around $500 a month. This includes water, electricity, TV and lawn maintenance. Insurance on the boat is more than half of what I pay for the home. I have no taxes to pay for the boat in FL.

We have many livaboards around here that can't afford a home, but can afford a $50,000 boat. Rent alone on a decent place here is going to run between $800 and $1,000 a month.

Seriously, I am planning my retirement now. In 10 years I plan to be on a boat (Hawaii or Florida) after that last one leaves the nest. NO more snow (Northern Wisconsin is for the birds, er, penguins!) and the like. I've been looking at cabin cruisers and I must say I really like the 60's and 70's Chris Craft ! I love the wood. My only question: are they good boats for salt water ? Does it matter? Yes, I'm a newbie. But I'm very serious about this (and very excited - 10 years will take forever!). Any advice would be great. I'm fine with small spaces, limited "stuff". I need to down size. I figure since I'm planning now, I should be in good shape by then. Now if the world would settle down and still be here in 2023. :lol:

living onboard, oh no.
I used to be a fisherman, living onboard for 2-4 months, working in North Atlantic. Not for me for sure ....

We lived on the Party Cruiser for half the summer when we first got it. I just drove to work and back from the harbor (54 miles round trip). We liked it so much we sold our home to buy the SkipperLiner, and we lived on that (for 7 summer months) in '06 thru half of '09. Issues at our business since then (biz has been good enough it eats all our time) have moved us back to "weekend boater" status, and we absolutely HATE it.

O.k. Here's a question. Most of the boats that I have been looking at have stated that they are/ have been in fresh water.

I'm getting the feeling that I should be looking for inland slips instead of salt water. I've been thinking of Florida but I need some info on this. It sounds like salt water is a boats worst enemy. I really miss the ocean. What are some of the boats that can take being on the sea?
