My computer has been acting like it has a virus, but my scanners pick up nothing.
What i'm getting is an aplication running, of iunknown origin. When it is active, my ISP connection seems to freeze-up, as if someone is scanning me, or picked-up a phone. My keyboard seizes-up,and then, let's go again. It's agrivating to say the least, when I'm in here, typing-away, only to find 90% of what I just posted hasn't appeared!
I have to go back and edit/edit/edit!
The only "cure" is to go offline, 3-finger salute the puter, and "end task" on "rnapp",which sometimes returns "program not responding"!!
Argh!! Does anyone know what 'RNAPP" is, where it camr from, and finally, how to keep it outta my startup? (which upon checking, isn't listed as a startup program?

12 Footer:

It may help if you tell us what operating system you are running etc...

Do you have any kind of utility programs such as Norton Systemworks or?
It's saved my butt a number of times when I was running W98SE.

Since I've switched to XP Pro, I haven't had a single crash, and I've been running it for many months now.

I also run a full licensed version of Zone Alarm Pro. I liked the demo so much, I bought the program. It's worth it.

Also, you don't really need a firewall program if you are on dialup, since your IP changes each time you log on. A firewall will help on dialup, but not really necessary, unless your IP is prone to being hacked, or you are extra-paranoid.

I've only been hacked once, and that was because I just installed always-on high speed internet, and DIDN'T have a firewall up. I've never been hacked on dialup.

Unless of course, you open an .EXE file in you e-mail. This is your most common way to get a bug.
ZoneAlarm or any firewall won't help you if the operator (you) opens an infected e-mail.

I run Norton Antivirus, as well as Zone Alarm, and they scan all e-mail. Some ISP's offer a virus e-mail scan for an extra fee.

H.

RNAPP is part of Windows dial-up networking (DUN). Go to www.google.com, click on the "Groups" tab and search for RNAPP. With a quick review, I found many cases of folks having similar problems but to real solutions. Maybe a more indepth reading wil find something.

Re: Anyone Know What "RNAPP" is?

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll just re-install winderz, and see if the cures it. It might just be this lousey twisted pair line I have. It's a dedicated phone line, but I have heard noise onh it before during a test.
It might just be cheaper at this point to dump the dedicated line, modem, and ISP, and get one of them new-fangled DSL modems installed. It would cost just about the same.

Hey 12'r,

I ditto the others about DSL. But, if you can get the cable system-do that. It's even faster.

I had DSL for about 18 months before switching to cable. Now I think DSL stands for: Danged Slow Line.

Re: Anyone Know What "RNAPP" is?

12ftr, if you are serious about reloading windows, then you can afford to get drastic.

check your antivirus programs, to see if they are running more than a 'basic' package. you might read the help docs in those programs to see how much they're running.

you need to check your network settings to see if there are protocols you can remove, such as netbios, IPX/SPX, etc (everything but TCP/IP) and clean out old gateways, win servers, dns servers, etc. you'd want to get the ok thru your isp on what they require first.

you can run regedit, go to local machine, system- and remove commercial programs you don't want, or that you think are related to problems with your machine. whenever trying to remove a 3rd party software, you should go thru Programs and try to find an uninstall program first. or even use windows explorer to search in their directories for it... then if getting windows errors on bootup for files not found, do the regedit.

just givin you some options in case you want to 'tinker' and are prepared to reload in a worst case scenario... our friggin company IT dept is so rightwing, we have to endure (individual pc)system scans every 10mins and full virus library updates every hour... it caused our field service depts to come up with hacks just to keep support techs from going postal...

boy, don't i miss the good ole unix systems... :(

Re: Anyone Know What "RNAPP" is?

Thanks for all the replies. I still have the problem, and am a bit nervous about a re-install. I tried deleting it, and AOL wont funtion without it.
AOL stinks anyway, and I might just dump the whole thing for DSL under a real ISP.

12' AOL, can sometimes be a pain. Checking that you are only running TCP/IP is a good idea. Uninstalling AOL and reinstalling is something you could try. Also, try uninstalling your dial-up adapter and reinstalling. MAke sur eyou write down all your setting including your DNS server IP addresses if AOL uses them.

As for cable and DSL, cable can ultimately be faster or slower. It uses shared bandwidth. If few of your neighbors are using cable modems, then you have some really good bandwidth. If a lot use it, then it can be slow. A lot of cable companies have good deals on cable with cable internet service which can be about the same amount as some people pay their ISPs, extra phone line and cable with premimum channels

Re: Anyone Know What "RNAPP" is?

12footer,

I got cable about a year ago and will NEVER go back. It is really nice. Also, another thing about aol is that they censor emails. I sent an email containing links to sites that talked bad about aol to a friend who has AOL and all he received was a blank page   . I forwarded it back to myself at the same time I sent it. It showed up on my yahoo mail just like it should've. Therefore, I know It was sent properly. That's just one more reason I HATE AOL  . Not only that, they "infect" your computer with these little "AOL viruses." By that, I mean those annoying little icons wanting you to sign up for something. They also will rip you off big time. When you call to cancel, they tell you that you have until the end of the current period to get buddy info and the like. Then, if you sign back on, they automatically reactivate your account  . So, if you do get cable or dsl don't sign onto AOL after you cancel. It's one of their "evil" tricks. They also will kick you off if you aren't using their browser. Did I mention that I HATE AOL. If you like Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc. you are up the creek without a paddle if you don't click a link in the AOL Browser within 10-20 minutes. Hmm.. What about long downloads :( . What about all the pornographic and other spam they have other companies send. ERRRRRRRRR!!!!!! Just be sure to back up any important files before you reload windows. Also, make sure you have the serial number and the cd isn't scratched bad. You don't want setup to stop mid-way through ;) . Anyway, GOOD LUCK with getting it all straight.

James

Re: Anyone Know What "RNAPP" is?

12"......you may be encountering that dreaded slow-down as a result of unwanted files having infiltrated your computer, like pop-up window searchs and the like. These are not viruses but bothersome advertisement related files like HotBar and Gator. Go to AdAware.com and download the free scanner to test out. The first time I ran the Ad Aware scan I found over 250 problematic files, it will give you the option to remove them after identification.

If you have kids or anyone else using music down-load programs or connecting to other peer-to-peer sites you are undoubtly picking up a huge number of unwanted files everyday. Adult entertainment sites are also notorious for contaminating your computer with junk ad-ware.

Try it out and let us know if you notice the improvement that I did...........good luck.

Mr. Bill what is the address for the site? Please cut and paste it or something because when I type it in I get no where near that site.

Re: Anyone Know What "RNAPP" is?

Found it ran it and it gave me quite a few things to delete I never knew were there. Still got a problem though but it is not too bad. Can't defrag because of errors on disk can't fix errors because something is causing it to restart at least 10 times because something is writing to the disk drive. Done all the Virus Scan and such I can think of. There is one simple command you run that allows you to control what is running at startup and I can't think of what it is  I never had these problems till the wife started with her music downloads my system was not set up for this and I know I need more memory and such so I am trying to cut corners anywhere I can. Got plenty of disk space just slow running sometimes.
DUH Msconfig.exe as soon as I quit thinking about it there it was I had 4 programs running in the background i had no idea were running, what they were or how i had goten them in the first place. I deleted them all. I hope they don't mess with the wif's ability to download things. I wish she would quit till I can get some more memory for this thing.

Re: Anyone Know What "RNAPP" is?

Peter, shut your screensaver off. Set it to "none",or change the time to as long as it can go. It's the screensaver that is preventing you from defraggin your drive, by interupting the process.
Don't axe me how or why the brains at Microsoft choose to eave this annoying problem in 98, but they did.

Re: Anyone Know What "RNAPP" is?

Already have it set just to shut down so I have a black screen I already figured out the screensaver bit. It was not that it was the 4 things that were running/downloaded that I had no clue were on the machine. One thing was Bonzi Buddy which while I was figuring out what it was my wife said it was this cute little ape thingy that helps her find music. I said I can free up memory and reduce download time getting rid of it and deletion time it was. It is a problem of too many people using the same computer.

Re: Anyone Know What "RNAPP" is?

No,shut it off. If you have it set to go to black screen or any type of screensaver set with the timer, it will interupt scandisk.
You can allways go back afterwards, and reset it to your liking. But when it goes black, it will interupt.
Again, I dont know why,but it does.
So give it a try with "none" and no set time to take effect.
