Any saving the engine? I’m devastated

1974 Evinrude 70HP.
This was my dad’s boat and he passed away 2 years ago. I’m devastated.
I’ll be able to get the boat out of the water - I’ll have help in a few hours.
Once it’s out what can I do to save the engine.

I’m concerned about trying to start it if the starter isn’t completely dry. I’ll take the plugs out and crank by hand to get water out of cylinders

There maybe some water in the carburetor and in the gas tank. Get a shop to do it while you wait. Tell them it is your fathers boat ! They may go and be caring.

It is the bearings on the crankshaft that are damaged by exposure to OXYGEN..-----The starter motor is the last of your worries !-----Get it running ASAP.----As in yesterday.

You are lucky it is fresh water. Drain the carbs, Oil the cylinders, hook up some fresh fuel and run her for 45 minutes to dry it out.

Saltwater would require a tear down.

It’ll run again. Dry it off, fresh fuel. If you got spark it’ll run.. if you can’t get it to run. Flood the thing with 2 stroke oil. Buy a little time.. the starter will be dry enough by the time your ready to spin it over

After that, the steering cable and helm will need to be replaced, and the control cables as well.

I’m not sure how to drain the carbs. There doesn’t appear to be drain screws under the bowls

Ok. Looks like I’ll need to take the carbs off. I started doing that already

This is all to much, OMC suggest if you can't clean it pretty damn fast resubmerge it.

But what I do, and this is in salt, is remove the plugs, stick the garden hose down the holes and flush it out. Then rinse down everything and pour two stroke oil down each spark plug hole and hand crank for awhile. Now it's pickled.

Then start drying things and looking at things that might have gotten water in it.

I did one 2 or 3 summers ago on my 1982 30 HP Johnson.

Try do that with a four stroke!

And just to be clear, get it running right away!

And keep it running for at least an hour

Spraying some Engine Cleaner(BRP) or PowerTune(Merc) into the Carbs when running, will help flush out Water from the Bearings,

I took the cover off the front of the carbs. The drain plugs don’t seem to be accessible without further disassembly

I also just sprayed a bunch of Power Tune in the carbs and cranked it over with the spark plugs out. I’m just not sure I’ll be able to get the carbs off and then back on. I don’t have gaskets and I’m sure the gaskets will need to be replaced if I take the carbs off

Was it running when it went down? Probably didn't need to do much of it wasn't.
