I remember from my childhood (I was 4 or 5) fishing with Dad. My older brother (one year older) hooked a small sunfish on his kid size rod. On the way in a northern pike grabbed the sunnie and my brother could barely get it to shore... we saw both fish in the shallows 3 feet from shore before the pike ripped the reel off of my brothers pole

I had something similar happen, only it was a bass that took my brim and all the line on my reel. I cried too.

One of my friends caught one the same way off a pier in Wilmington, NC. Craziest thing that it kept hanging on all the way up. He thought he had snagged a rock til it started crawling around.

That was probably a spider crab, not a Blue crab. It's pretty common to catch spider crabs at pretty much all the commercial fishing piers along the Eastern Seaboard, I think.

maybe a deep diving lure that impaled in the soft part of the clam? No mater what, that is unusual to say the least.

Here's a freshwater clam my nephew caught last summer on a Mepps spinner. It was a hoot when he pulled it out of the water in front of 4 others.

Back when I was a young guy, some friends and I used to fish off a pier in California at night. We'd be out there most of the night. One of the things we always took with us was a Coleman stove and a big pot. We'd get that pot boiling as soon as we got to the pier.

While we fished, a baited crab net was always in the water. Every so often, we'd pull it up, and break one claw off the rock crabs we found in it. In the boiling water they'd go, while the one-armed crabs went back in the drink to regrow that claw. Snacks to go along with the beer. Good times.

Many years ago bass fishing in Canada I got a bass on at the same time as a friend. We both reeled in and a 12" bass came out of the water between us, one hook in each side of his mouth!

At least once a year, I've seen a spider crab come up on a line with a fish hooked and occsionally a mussel that grabbed a hook.

I guess I was about 10yo when we went to go fishing out of Sotherley, MD. (Southern Chesapeake). We saw so many crabs swimming along the top of the water (sometimes doubles) we had no time for fishing. Using just hand nets (we had 3), we caught 1 1/2 bushel in no time. Crabs were so numerous, we had touble getting the nets empty to get the next one (which was usually bigger than what was tying up the nets). It seemed as though the collosal ones got away.
We feasted good that afternoon when we got back.

Funniest thing I've seen is my friend caught a clam on a lure! If I didn't see it happen I wouldn't believe it. The clam actually took the hook in and closed the shell (the hook was inside with the clam). What's even more ridiculous is that this was a lure and not a hook with a sinker.

I've had that happen several times to me. Clams lay gapping open, and when something goes across their gapping mouth, they snap closed (reflex). Some places, there can be quite a few on the bottom, so it's not such a big long shot as you might think. I've got them on big spoons casting for pike from shore, when the lure skims/bumps bottom as it comes in. They can be a PITA to get off the hook.

Crabs are only good if you're crabbing. Otherwise I hate them. Everytime I got out in the bay fishing for sturgeon or something, they just eat my bait left and right. We do have those little bait cages for our poles and we go crabbing on the boat, drop some pots, then drop anchor and fish for crabs with the poles

New here but have a funny story...
While we were on the Chesapeake during 4th of July, my 9 year old put out a crab pot with my dad. We came back after fireworks and pulled it out to find no crab but 2 catfish and a striped bass looking very confused! We let them go and later she caught one little blue crab that had to be thrown back. She is still bragging about catching those three fish without a fishing pole!

A year or two ago I was fishing at Moraine and I caught two snails on the same cast. They were somewhere between golf ball and tennis ball sized, and they both somehow managed to close their "shell closer flap" (I can't remember the name) over my line, a foot or so up from the hook. I released them in the shallows, it probably took them a week to make it back to where I caught them...

I've seen my Brother in law catch a fresh water clam once when we were fishing in a river in Alberta, so I know it can be done. I caught a seagull once when i was out in BC fishing with my dad. We were using downriggers fitted with quick release clips with a light plastic lure. Once as I released the lure it was out behind the boat flipping around and must have looked like a wounded herring to this hungry gull. So the gull swooped down and grabbed the lure. It was odd reeling in a line that went up instead of down.

For the animal lovers the gull was only hooked into the beak and was released unharmed after a couple of "trophy" photos.

now that's funny right there

we pull up lots of crabs while flounder fishing; they are a nuisance and are usually sponge sooks. But if i pull up a good jimmy I throw it inthe box, then add it to the pot (trap) when I get home. i have caught lots of flounders in my crab pot, but too small to keep.

For my wife and I, it wasn't catching fish and crabs at the same time it was sea lions! When we'd go fishing off of San Diego and hit into the fish good, the sea lions would invariably show up and snatch our catch right off the line. They never once got hooked themselves (thank goodness) but they sure ruined the fishing.
