Okay here's the problem: raging toothache from an abscess/infected root. Got the antibiotics and using simple aspirin (which usually works) but this pain is driving me crazy (or crazier if you know me personally )

I'm in a Catch 22 situation: the dentist (they're all failed hairdressers in my opinion!) says "It's that tooth there that's the problem. extraction is the only option" and I say "Fine! Go ahead and yank it out!"
"Can't do that" says the dentist, "Not until the infection/pain has gone"

So, has anyone, anywhere, got a home remedy to get rid of the pain until the antibiotics kick in and do their stuff?

Oh and just to make the problem even worse: alcohol is out of the question because the antibiotic is Metronidazole (aka Flagyl) and if you've ever had a headache caused by mixing this and alcohol then you'll know what I'm talking about

Help please before I get some Molegrips and start some DIY dentistry

Yeah yeah, I know: get to a dentist!
