Any home remedies for toothache?

Okay here's the problem: raging toothache from an abscess/infected root. Got the antibiotics and using simple aspirin (which usually works) but this pain is driving me crazy (or crazier if you know me personally ;) )

I'm in a Catch 22 situation: the dentist (they're all failed hairdressers in my opinion!) says "It's that tooth there that's the problem. extraction is the only option" and I say "Fine! Go ahead and yank it out!"
"Can't do that" says the dentist, "Not until the infection/pain has gone"

So, has anyone, anywhere, got a home remedy to get rid of the pain until the antibiotics kick in and do their stuff?

Oh and just to make the problem even worse: alcohol is out of the question because the antibiotic is Metronidazole (aka Flagyl) and if you've ever had a headache caused by mixing this and alcohol then you'll know what I'm talking about :(

Help please before I get some Molegrips and start some DIY dentistry

Yeah yeah, I know: get to a dentist!

Cloves or clove oil. Taste terrible but works on tooth pain.

Can you get/use Anbesol? It is a specific for toothache.

It is a Benzocaine preparation for topical application. I use it for fire ant bites, and carry it in my tackle box in case of embedded hooks.. It has been very effective for me.

Good luck. :)

I'll second JB
Anbesol, or Numbzit, ususally sold for babies that are cutting teeth. Not calling you a baby by any means ;) but they've worked for me plenty times.

Re: Any home remedies for toothache?

Not sure if this will work but heres the story. A friend had a severe gum infection and the dentist said he would have to have all his teeth pulled. He couldn't stand the tooth aches so he started taking swigs of hydrogen peroxide solution and sloshing it around in his mouth a few times a day (DO NOT SWALLOW ANY). That was 20 years ago and he still has all his teeth.

NOTE: I am not saying you or anybody else should ever do this but I have tried it and the foam and taste are nasty.

Dump a Goody's or BC powder in your mouth, then use your tongue to kinda push it towards the bad tooth. Pack that nasty tasting powder all around the tooth. When you can't stand the taste anymore, swallow and get some whiskey.

Ibuprofen is supposed to be one of the best over the counter meds for this due to it's ability to reduce swelling better. I've also had good luck sucking on a tea bag placed around the ailing tooth.

Best of luck Stan. I know how much pain these things are.

Re: Any home remedies for toothache?

Thanks for the tips so far: I'll Google and see what comes up in the UK as an alternative for Anbesol (sounds awful like Anusol and that's defo for the wrong end :D )

Hydrogen peroxide is what I should have used 20 years ago and didn't :( Paying the price now for skimping on tooth brushing.

Ah, if only my smile actually looked like this :D

Weeeeeehey! It's available in the UK as a pharmacy only drug.

Now I just need to find a scarf or wait for the bitterly cold wind to die down so I can mozey out and get some.

Interesting contents : Anbesol contents

Thanks for the tip: I'll let you know how it works

Hi Stan
Anadin extra is the only over the counter pain killer in the UK that works on teeth.

Stan, I don't know about the UK, but here, any dentist worth his salt would prescribe something stronger for pain ( hydrocodone, etc..) as well as the antibiotic. Good luck.

Flagyl for an abcess? You need Keflex,Amoxicillin, or Penicillin. Flagyl is not the drug of choice for your situation. Find another dentist, this one doesn't know what he/she is doing.

Re: Any home remedies for toothache?

VICODIN!! HYDROCODONE!!

Ibuprofen can keep it down if you don't let it get ahead of you.

You have my complete sympathy - tooth pain is the worst imaginable. I'd rather give birth.

Kaphlex in the drug of choice in my neck of the woods, too...but individuals may vary...if you have experience with one or another antibiotic working or not working...they usually ask.

Don't they do root canals in England? Nasty business, but it's over in a couple hours and you get to keep your own teeth.

My dentist & I are on a program (informal of course) to crown one tooth a year (max allowed by my insurance) - we just pick the worst one. Over the years all my fillings have been replaced. My cavities have cavities. But I haven't had any new cavities in maybe 15 years. I learned too late about taking care of my teeth.

Re: Any home remedies for toothache?

That isn't the same Anbesol formula that I have, Stan. My liquid is 10% Benzocaine plus inactive coloring and flavoring ingredients.

The lidocaine gel should still have the same deadening effect, plus there is the clove oil in the gel.

It may be that the US formula is not available in the UK, or that the UK formula is even better.

Good luck. :)

Agree with holdimhook and jtex. If your dentist can't prescribe it, call your family doctor.
