If a car is doing 100mph. At the point where the tire meets the road how fast is it going.

Re: Another one to think about

If you and I are thinking about the same part (nearly 2 in the morning - I am a lil' woozy) I would have to say...

0 mph.

But, we have to remember that the earth is moving at a high rate of speed. So, I would guess it would be the speed of the earth + or - 0, depending on the direction of the car, if going east and west, or just the speed of the earth, if the car is going north or south.

If skidding with the brakes locked on an icy road? 100 mph.

Nope, the correct answer there is n/a. If he is sliding on the ice, the tire is not meeting the road, like the original question asked, but meeting the ice, which is on top of the road. And, even so, you forgot to add the speed of the earths rotation/revolution + the speed that the tectonic plates are moving across the mantle of the earth.....

Okay, I am bored tonight.:D

Well speed is always relative to something else. Even time is relative. the time passes slightly slower on earth than it does in space due to increased gravitational fields. So we have to assume that the speed discussed is only relative to the road.

Re: Another one to think about

If the car is a dragster heading toward the traps, tire speed could be quite high relative to the pavement.
